Been cool enough to work in the shop after work, so I decided to start tearing down the 43H to fix some leaks and replace some parts, then get it ready for paint.

What is the best way to see if the generator works?

Owen has it right about the springs missing, will need to see if I can still get those from CaseIH.

Are the two pieces you are referring to the arms to the left of the fan in the picture? If so, this is where the shutter plate which runs through the radiator to the shutters mount and off the other side runs the rod back to the steering column to the crank to open the shutters.

Good luck with your H restoration! I too have a 1943 H that I'm restoring, just need to fix the brakes, seat, tire tubes and paint it.

Yes I think so, that piece moves back and forth loosely so I think something is missing. I have access to other original H's so I can see what is missing or been hacked up.

You sure did! I missed that link before. Sorry. Thanks a bunch! That's just what I needed to know. The MD tanks won't work. third party image So the search continues!

Are you missing a couple of little parts that go infront of the fan under the two longer bolts? I have no idea what the function of the parts are but I recall some springs and something else being on there.

The two springs hold the impeller shaft forward so that it does not rub on the back side of the impeller. The water pump has two ball bearings that support the pulley but, unlike modern pumps, the impeller shaft is carried on a brass sleeve type bearing. That is why there are two grease zerks. On lubes the two ball bearings. The other lubes the impeller shaft bushing. If you over grease the bushing the excess is forced into the coolant. If you do not grease it, the coolant will get in between the shaft and bushing and cause corrosion and rapid wear. Missing or broken springs will also allow the coolant to replace the grease more quickly.

Randy,
Can I ask you for two sets of pictures? One that shows the mounting of the small gas tank, and some others that shows the mounting for the VR on top of the gen?

Many thanks!

I'd start by removing that cover band and take a look-see inside. If it is clean and the brushes appear to be OK, then you can take it an auto parts store and have them test it for you. Might be a small fee unless you buy something, but it's the easiest and quickest.
