It IS usually cheaper to buy one used if it's cheap. But, I've made many over the years - making the spear from a 3/4 or 1 ton truck axle. Just sharpen the end with a torch and a grinder. The other end with the flange makes a good mounting surface. I've never bent or broken one - at the least they are as strong as the factory spears.

You may be money ahead by finding a used one and adapting it to fit your loader. My son made one for shop class. We bought the main spear at Orschlens, which is a local farm and home here in Missouri. The spear was about $90.00 and broke on the very first bale. I took the spear back, got my $$$ back and the rest of it is leaning against a tree by the shop. I probably had $140 or so invested in it. The neighbors swear by SCHHHHH ! John Deere spears. Theirs has two spikes on the bottom. I have watched them pick up a pallet with 60 bags of soybean on it. The spikes bowed way down but held. Not suggesting abusing something like this, but I know from first hand they are good.

I've made one before and then I found it to be cheaper to go to an auction and buy used ones. I have 2 on hand right now and I have less then $50 in the pair and I can't make one that cheap so I don't make hem any more
