Hi, I re-wired my 1943 Farmall H exactly how Bob M's wiring diagram showed. Everything seems to be working good. One night I was putting the front wheels back on the tractor and I needed more light, so I turned on the DIM headlights when the tractor was not running. While I was working, I could smell something burning, so I looked at the Dash (switch box) and there was smoke coming from it, I quickly pulled off the Positive battery cable (ground). It was too dark to see inside the switch box, but I felt all the wires on the tractor and they were not hot or anything. The next day, I took apart the switch box to check the fuse. It is the correct amps and was not blown. Nothing I could see had any signs of being "burned" or damaged, everything looked normal. This is strange, what is causing this??? I have not turned on the lights since then.

Thanks, Andy.

I think Jim hit this on the head, Andy. By BN did the same, except it was the low-charge resistor. It had been unwired for so long that it had lots of stuff on it, even after I claned it up.

Had about the same thought as you, too. All this work and she's about to go up in flames! Yikes.

Keep an eye on it, and make sure you don't have a bunch of chaff or other crud in there that actually could catch fire, but the coil should burn off whatever residue there was pretty quickly and be fine after that.

Andy
On the back of the light switch is a resistor It is a wire wraped thing. Some are mounted on a piece of Mica insulator. They get very hot and in doing so they reduce the voltage to the headlamps only. If the lights are left off for a while, dire and contaminants get on the resistor, when used they burn off. If more, or higher wattage bulbes are used in the lights, this resistor will burn out. JimN

The resistor looks OK except the cardboard looking thing behind is broke, the wire is OK. It was that way when I bought the switch. Would that be the problem??

Thanks!

It is not a problem, It needs to get hot. just keep wires away from the back of it, and don't use more watts than stock. JimN
