300 U Steering Problem

A friend of mine bumped a hedge tree with the right front wheel of his 300 Utility tractor. Now the right front wheel does not turn with the steering wheel. Nothing is bent or stripped in the axle or wheel. It seems the right side of the steering gear box is not rotating when the wheel turns. Occasionally, the shaft will move some. It is like there is a gear broken. The left side turns the left wheel normally. The left side works fine.

Is this a big job? Is there any way to fix it without taking it all apart? I am wondering if we can even get the parts. The steering has been sloppy for a very long time. The steering gear box would no longer hold oil. It has been that way for 25 or more years. I think the gearbox was pretty much shot and bumping the tree just stripped a gear. Any other ideas? Thanks.

Unfortunately there is a broken tooth on the right side (driven) shaft. This tooth is part of the shaft, and not a gear on the shaft. This is also am occurrence that has history. It appears to be the weakest point on the steering. It does take a pretty powerful hit to break it, so "bumped" may be a bit of a understatement!

The solutions are get a different gear NOS, or used good.

OR: find a machine shop that is very good, and will build up that tooth and re grind it to perfection. It must be near perfect to stand the full width strain on the tooth!!!

Good luck, JimN

Thanks Jim. It is a fairly serious problem. I"ll remove it and see what we can do. May have to have a machine shop rebuild it best they can and ry to go easy on it after that.
