Well,I have this WIX filter and I hate to say it... but which end is up? . I figure I'll start at this and it will have a totally different filter and I'll be scratching my head with no internet service. I appreciate the help.

Andy

I have magic markered on the wall over the oil shelf,"H filter short end up."
As Andy and CNKS say, the protruding end goes to the bottom.
The last few times I've changed mine I've stopped by the Carquest on the way into town and they've had one in stock.
Good luck, Wm

You don't say what tractor or what filter.
If it's an a, B or C (the limits of my hands-on experience), big end down, little end up, and make sure the old gasket is out of the groove before putting the new one in.

Oops,I'm sorry guys, I was at work and too many people were asking me questions while I was trying to type. My goal was type it early, have an answer when I get home. I have a 1950 M, the filter has an open end and an end that has a protrusion about 3/4 of an inch.

You are correct, and all letter, Super, and numbered series except the M-450, excluding the early H models, use the same filter, along with several later models.
