What is the difference between stepped head pistons and flat pistons? Is the stepped head like the Fire Craters? Will i have to do any modifaction to the heads is i use stepped heads and the ones i take out are flat? Long story short, i changed the oil in my 48 Farmall H today. I saw antifreeze in the oil, it runs too good to be a cracked head so either the head gasket is shot or the o rings are leaking on the sleaves.

I took the old girl apart. It was the head gasket

Oh ya, you shouldn't need any mods for stepped pistons. Just put them in mine, and milled the head down a little, no problems at all. Except all the money.

One thing that gets overlooked is the freeze plugs. I had coolant in my oil, was coming from plug behind coolant intake housing.

Well there are no "O"rings on the sleeves. The tractor has dry sleeves in a cast bore. There are possible head cracks that do not affect combustion chamber leakage. As you noted, a head gasket would also do it. Block cracks in the skirt area of the block are less common. Cracked cylinder bores with a loose sleeve (or pinholes in the sleeve) can also leak. If it were mine, I would put three heaping teaspoonfuls of fine ground black pepper (yes that is what I said) into the radiator, and give it a week of operation to see if I could stop the leak. If not I would pressurize the cooling system to 7psi MAX. and with the pan and valve cover off, I would look for leaks. Step head pistons will work without any concern at all. Best of luck, JimN

Thank you Jim. I inherited the old girl and done alot of work to her so far. She belonged to my grandpa and as far as my dad remembers, the engine has never been rebuilt. I figure its over due so i am thinking of doing the in frame rebuild, as the oil pressure is great. It smokes some now but not too bad but i hope to have a full restoration on her in a year. Is the stepped head pistons the same as the Fire Craters? If it is i liked to use those instead of spending 400 a pop per cyclinder on the Fire Craters.
