Does a 1956 Farmall 400 come stock with a 'live PTO'? My understanding is that a live PTO runs off the engine and not the transmission (so it will turn the PTO even when stopped and it is turned on and off by a switch/pedal/lever), correct?

On the 400 Don't forget to explain the seasonial disconect to him. It was there to stop 2/3rds.? of the IPTO drive train from turning if pto was not going to be used for say 3 or 4 months. I mention this in case when you get the 400 the IPTO does not work this could be the problem. This disconect is explained in easy to understand detail in your operators manual. THIS MANUAL IS A MUST HAVE! Armand

Wallace: I really wouldn't want to depend on these guys if I knew nothing about PTO. In the early days of pre 1954 Farmalls we had transmission driven pto, basically it stopped every time you depressed the clutch pedal.

Then we had LIVE PTO, and there were two types; Independant PTO which was one lever or switch could be engaged or disengaged no matter what you may be doing with transmission or clutch. The second LIVE PTO was two stage clutch, you push the clutch half way down to stop transmission function and all the way down stops PTO. You have to stop tractor to engage or disengage that one, thus it couldn't be called independant, however they are both LIVE PTO as you can stop and or shift gears without affecting the PTO.

There is another LIVE PTO, called the M&W hand clutch, it basically was a clutch in an H or M brake shaft that stopped forward movement through the diffential, however you could not shift gears.

Still further there is a ground driven PTO, MF and several European tractors had it. Basically a transmission driven PTO that changed speeds everytime you shifted gears. These work great on power driven trailers, the trailer has same wheels and rear end ratio as tractor, you put a load on the trailer, and the lowly MF 35 will out pull two Farmall 400s.

Go for what Hugh has said.
Some 400s could have a been ordered (I believe) with a tranny driven PTO. If this one has a largish unit on the back of the differential (a square bowling ball in size) and a hand lever on the right with a thumb button, it is a full Live PTO. It is band operated (some late might be clutch operated, but not likely yours) They were manual bands with a braking band and an engagement band. It probably also has the seasonal disconnect lever under the trans (not accessible from on the tractor). JimN

Yes they were available with tranny driven pto. I have a 450 diesel with it on it. Have also seen 300 and 350 with tranny drive.

ahhh... ok, I think I'm getting it. I guess I was using the wrong verbage. So independent is what I want.... not live. Live is clutch/tranny driven (ex- you have to have the tranny engaged to have the PTO work). Independent (which now makes sense) is independent of the transmission. If the motor is on, you have PTO when you want or need it. Which is what I want and apperantly have. I haven't picked up the tractor yet so some of the dumber questions will work themselves out, I hope.

On another note, my tractor doesn't have a side belt attached. i am not sure I would need it but if I wanted to, can it be put on?

Yes, most did have independant PTO, which is driven any time the engine is running. It is hydraulic and can be feathered in gear at any engine speed. The 400 has a lever on the right of seat to engage pto with. Some did not have IPTO and are clutch/tranny driven. Like the Brown Dirt Cowboy said, live and independant are two different things.

I am really brand new to this so forgive ignorance.

So, you stop to engage or disengage the PTO, BUT you can be stopped and the PTO can be kept running (ex- powering a baler) and then you can keep going right? I guess... if I am baling, and something jams up the baler or something, I can stop and leave the pto running while I adjust it or something? I use that example with the same knowledge that I am asking these questions with... be gentle! haha

You can do that with INDEPENDENT PTO but not with
any other type of pto

You can turn the live PTO on or off while the tractor is moving and you don't have to push in the clutch to engage the PTO. There is a lever on the right side of the seat. I may be wrong, but I THINK live PTO was a option, I know not all of them have it.

Andy you are thinking of Independent PTO. On live PTO you have to be stopped to engage PTO. On my Massey you push clutch pedal half way down and stop the movement of the tractor and push pedal all the way down and stop the tractor and the PTO. Tom
