Recently bought a 52' Super C. This is what I know about it...it was a good running tractor 15yrs ago...it has spent the last 15yrs outside. I pulled it int he garage, I got it running really nice now, except , it smokes. I let it run about 30 minutes today & I took it on about a mile ride down the road & back...still smokes. The first day I got it, I changed all the fluids & noticed about 2 tablespoons of antifreeze came out before the oil...I decided to run it & watch it...so far, I've started the tractor a dozen times & no more antifreeze is coming out. The previous owner told me he put straight antifreeze/ no water in the radiator because he knew it wouldn't be run. He also told me he filled the cylinders w motor oil prior to setting it outside. I tookt he hood off & looked @ valve train & I have never seen a dirtier motor, aweful, ugly, never seen anything so bad, but, it runs so nice(other than the smoke).....I'm not doing a rebuild this winter (other projects)....any ideas?

Same problem with a W-9 that sat for about 20 years. I like MMO (which is probably nice-smelling tranny fluid) and SeaFoam.

Just working the engine and the normal heating and cooling cycles should eventually break the rings free.

I would also do my best to clean the sludge under the valve cover and also pull the oil pan and scrape out any sludge you can... third party image

All of the suggestions have merit in my opinion. My process is a bit different: oil change with a quart of Rislone added to the new oil. Run for 5-10 hours. Change oil and filter. Rislone will clean most of the gunk and goop out.
Marvel mystery oil or blaster are great products to loosen loosen stuck rings. TVF (trans valve fix) is another product from the makers of Blaster that works well.

antifreeze in small amounts in the oil suggests that a head gasket needs to be replaced..... usually.

I did this to a BN that sat for 2 years out side, and was not stuck. after this treatment, and 20-30 hours of moderate work pulling logs out of the woods, and hauling firewood, the smoking has decreased dramatically. smokes for 1-2 mins until it warms up, then it goes away completely.

I still need to pull the head and replace the head gasket, as it seeps antifreeze along the magneto side, and there is always about 1/4 cup of antifreeze in the oil.

IMHO. (in my humble opinion).

give "Seafoam" a try! put some in the oil and gas. I'v had great luck with that freeing up rings and valves! Good stuff! The other stuff mentioned are also good products too.

If it where my tractor I would fill the cylinders with tranny fluid. Let it sit a few days, pull the plug back out, always put them back in to keep dirt etc out. Turn over the engine with the plugs out to clear the ATF, start it up and run it for an hour or so. If it was stuck rings doing that will help a lot. You can also put about a pint of ATF in the oil and a QT. into 5 gal. of gas all will help slow/stop the smoking and also clean up the engine. I use ATF because if cost less then half of the price of MMO and does the same thing

You may need to work that engine under load and see if that helps with the smoking. I had one with the two bottom plow & fasthitch hookup. That would give it a good workout. Hal
PS: Should've never sold it.

could be the rings are just stuck from sitting with the oil in the cylinders. for a couple dollar try, toodle on down to your local auto part store and get a jug of marvel mystery oil. pull the plugs, put a couple squrits in each cylinder and turn it over a few times, then put plugs back in and let set overnite. add about 4 ounces of mystery oil to the crancase oil too. start er up and then run er. its a pretty good cleaner and luber, it may help. you can also add some to the gasoline too. helps clean up the fuel system.
