Hi All , I found a junk M with a lot of bells and whistles left on it . Was wondering what it might be worth and if I could scrounge up the cash to buy it . It is a non-running tractor , engine stuck , no good tin , bad rubber and the lower pedestal is missing . But it has power steering wih it's own pump , live hydraulics , M&W hand clutch , single cylinder saginaw TPH and a M&W 9 speed and some other hard to get small parts . Plus wheel weights . The hand clutch snapped overcenter good and the tranny shifts smoothly just sitting still . There's some play in the steering pump and a couple minor parts are missing from the TPH . The engine is open to the elements but it looked like the tranny was still sealed . Since nothing can be tested beyond what I did what would the sum of the parts be worth ? How about seperated ? I think there's enough left of it to warrant rebuilding it . It would need rims , a rebuilt engine and a pedestal . Thanks ! ...Randy

That seems to be the problem . The seller knows what he has in the parts alone . I think the sum of the parts would bring $1300-$1500 if sold seperately . My problem is how to make an argument that I should be able to buy it for less than the sum total of it's parts . Otherwise it's going to be sold as parts . I might try and get the hand clutch if the price is low enough and I can't get the whole tractor . ...Randy

I am in agreement with D Slater,
And add to the thrill of the moment that if (for instance) you bought it for 800, that he would not need to spend the time and money to remove inspect and retail each component. That time could amount to a weeks worth of involvement, reducing the 1500 to about half, and the psychology to about 300%. Hit him with the idea that you intend to make it whole if at all possible, and if not you will then need to spend the effort to part it out. Good luck, JimN

If you realy want the tractor what its worth shouldn't matter as much as what you are comfortable paying. Argument I would use to owner is the condition of the parts can't be made in the non running condition. If all parts you list happened to be in good condition he could very well sell for $1500 plus. If you have to pay retail though you may as well inspect parts after there removed or get a garentee they are good. Though in the end he could probably put the parts on flea bay in unknown condition and with some buyers get $1000 to $1500 out of them.

Just sold 4200 pounds of scrap tractor parts monday for $290 with a fuel cost of $22. If the tractor you discribe was near me for a short haul I would give up to $500 or $600 for it. If all you want to do is break even. You could give more than that for it if you decided later not to fix it up.

This is really a dangerous find!! After you buy it you will soon say, Wonder if I could get that ting to run again? Then you will be looking for another "junked M" for parts. Then about a year and $3000 later you will be driving it in parades and looking for a good divorce lawyer. Actually it sounds like a good find, hopefully not one of those where the owner says, no don't want to sell it, will get the thing running one of these days!

Actually , I broke something in the tranny of my M with a 9-speed and I'd like to have the parts available when I open it up . The hand clutch , TPH and power steering are just icing . But you are right , it might be more fun to try and throw money at it and get it running . ...Randy

Around here, about an M would bring about 300 at the scrap dealer. If you can get it for a couple of hundred bucks then go for it. I bought a '51 M for 300 a while back. Turned out to have a later model engine with stepped head pistons! Also had some fairly decent 13.6-38's on it. Shifter is out of whack.

The parts you mentioned are worth well over $500 on eBay.

Just a power steering system will fetch around $400... third party image

Yup , and he wants 850 for the 9-speed , 250 for the hand clutch and 250 for the TPH . Plus , the hose cover on the deck -25- , the quick release hose coupling -40- the flip over seat -80- , etc, etc . Again , he's not a dummy , he knows what he has and is asking for top dollar on it all . But it's stuff that doesn't come available all that often around here . ...Randy

Check your local scrap yard and see what a tractor is bring per ton. Do not ask about a car because a car can be crushed but a tractor can't be. Then if you figure it is around 5000lbs give or take some go from there. I'm NOT saying scrap it but give say $50 more then what the person could get for it if they did sell it for scrap. If I where to guess I would say $100-300 depending on where you are and what scrap price is at this time. I know the last I checked tractors as scrap where bring around $40 a ton

Maybe 200 or scrap price. This gives you the value of the parts with an option to have it malted down if it is toast. Sounds like a good find. JimN
