W4 starter and wiring problems?

Hi I bought a 1950 W4,it has a magneto.
The wiring looks original, which is not good - all battery cable insulation is cracking and coming off. I plan on buying a new harness from Jim - Agri services in NY, and new battery cables. I am trying to get the starter off. I read previous posts that the belt pulley has to be removed this is definitely the case. The wiring is strange. The positive cable goes directly to the starter all alone. The negative cable goes back to the start button. Is this right? I know very little about magneto system wiring.
Thanks in advance
Ken

You have to hold your mouth just right to get the starter out without pulling the belt pulley, or just take the cover bolts loose, and those that will come out out, then pry up on the cover. I had pulled the starter on my I4 so many times I got pretty good at not taking anything out.Bet I cant do it now though.....

The electrical system is a positive ground. The cable that is attached to the positive post of the battery will most likely be attached to the chassis with one of the same bolts that is used to attach the starter to the tractor. This is the ground. The cable that is attached to the battery negative post is attached at its other end to one side of the starter button, and the opposite side of the starter button has a cable from it to the post on the starter. Click on the link for a better explanation.

Thanks guys, for your replies. I am pretty sure the starter needs attention, when I try to boost the tractor, smoke comes out of 1 -the battery cable / starter connection or 2 - the starter itself. I will try to just take the studs out of the belt pulley - I don't know why they had to engineer that area so tight??? The 1942 Farmall H that I am fixing for my neighbour is a totally different casting. I was sure they were originally positive ground, as my SMTA is,so someone has changed the wires. The starter just has a stud on it which makes sense as to the wire coming from the start plunger switch should go there instead of the positive battery cable. I bought a on/off switch from the local Case/IH dealer which is nothing like the original, plastic knob etc - probably the only type available, except it has two studs on the back for probably distributor ignition. Will this switch work with one wire attached to the one stud for magneto ignition? I assume so. I would have liked the look of the original type, does anyone know availability?

Thanks Ken
