Went out today and couldnt get it to not charge, no matter where the light switch was and no matter how many times I throttled it down or shut it down. Then I started reading voltages again on the gen, volts fluctuated a little between 6.3 to 6.6 when the throttle was moved. No where near 7 plus or so like I expected. I am starting to think the gen is bad and the battery is draining down over the month or so that it doesnt run. Then when I get it running again and charging, volts in the system come back up and the cutout starts working properly again. The 3rd brush is up as high as it will go. I looked for voltage increase at the gen and at the batt and there just isn't enough coming from the gen to give a good charge, maybe enough to maintain it though after fiddling. The amp gauge still shows a ok rate of charge 2 to 3 amps. Looks like its time for a trip to the gen shop. Brushes are good and making contact. I read 7.5 volts when I checked it during restoration, something happened between then and now, who knows. Thanks for all the help John and all the rest.

Scott#2, from your description of the problem, I'm not convinced that the generator is your problem. I'm very suspicious of the regulator, and I think that you may just have a grounding problem.

My suggestion is this: Scrape that nice new paint you put on during restoratation out from all the grounding connections on the tractor. A voltage regulator needs to be well grounded. I think yours may not be.

Not hard to do and won't cost you anything to try it.

If you dead ground the gennys FLD post thats her max charge assuming the gennys has a good ground n the belts tight n the wiring is all okay n the cutout relay is also fine. So if shes still a weak charger and the battery isnt at fault like a bad cell then its genny repair time like brushes or brush hold downs or bushings or commutator or armature etc.

I would ground the field then see what the volts read at the arm post on the gen. If grounding the field makes it charge your reg is bad or you need a better ground somewhere.
