do i need a resistor even with a magneto

The magneto produces its own spark and is no way connected to tractor electrical system at least in stock form. Some magnetos have gone bad for various reasons and have been converted to use battery ignition with external coil in this case you are only using points in magneto if this is what you have you will need resistor for 12 volt tractor. Some coils have built in resistor and do not need the external resistor.

Pat,
If the magneto is still functioning like it shoudl, producing its own power, it doesn't need a resistor. The only wire leading from the mag, besides the plug wires, will be the ground wire for shutting off the tractor.

The magshould not be "plumbed into any voltage of any type. Is grounded to shut off the tractor. Any battery voltage on the mag is Very bad for it. The stop button grounds the mag, that is it. JimN
