A lot of us have questions about authentic paint schemes for IHC tractors. One of the questions is: Were rims painted silver after the F-series tractors became red? I've wracked my memory to go back to my father's 1938 F-12 (with the cast wheels) and for the life of me, I cannot remember if the rims were painted silver--but I did not think so. Today, I came across a beatup old IHC brochure in my so-called collection of this stuff. It's for F-20 and F-30 and must date from about 1938, since it invites readers to ask for a separate brochure on the F-14. Right there staring me in the face is an F-20 with those beautiful cast wheels, and the rims are.....
(are you ready? is the suspense killing you?).....red! This does not prove that the rims were never painted silver at the factory later on, of course. It is not surprising that restorers paint them silver, because they do look pretty snazzy. This is the only proof that I have that shows that the rims were red at least some of the time before the end of production of these models.

My apologies for the incorrect date for the change of colours, as Farmallgray has pointed out it should have been 1st November 1936, the start of the 37 production year, and not 1937 as stated in my earlier reply.

I always understood that the silver (galvanized rims) came in about 1943, before then all wheels, separate rims or not, were red. My 1941 W4 is all red. The IHC paint committee decisions do not comment on different colour for rims. The tractors (after November 1, 1937) were red enamel and the wheels were red varnish. The 1940 paint chart show these as almost identical colours. Before November 1 1937 the tractors were grey with red wheels.

Actually it was Nov 1, 1936, not '37.

And here is one that shows that a tractor could have come from the factory with all red round spokes on the rear, and demountable plated rims on the front.

Here is an original IH photo of an F-20 with plated rims. There are several other photos showing them as well. I think it depended on who IH got the rims from.

IH never painted anything silver, the silver look is from the zinc plating that was the corrosion resistant coating IH specified for rims

They could have come either way from the factory.
I have seen factory photos with them both ways. I
The one piece wheels (round spokes) should be all red. On the cast wheels, red or silver is correct so paint them whichever way you like best. Here is a book that will answer most of your paint questions.

I always thought if the rim is seperate from the hub, then they are silver/galvanized. If they are a one piece deal, then they are red. At least thats what I have always seen.I know the rims on the back of my 14 were silver and rusty when I got them, and Im pretty sure the silver was the factory galvanizing.
