Can any one tell me why my farmall H wide front has the steering rods behind the frone axle, towards the seat rather than out in front? All the farmalls I have seen have the rods in front of the axle. Is mine a add on front end? thanks j

The early models had the tie tods out front, that was a problem because they would bend or break if you hit something on the front. Later, IH moved the tie rods behind the wide front end. That was a improvement. You could possibly have a aftermarket Shwartz wide front, the tie rods were behind on those front ends.

Looks like a Schwartz to me, the lighter-duty ones had the same wheel/hub as IH front ends with the 3-bolts.

Here's your picture:

Beats me! Never had that apart. The guy I bought it from told me that he purchased it from an IH dealer and was listed as "Schwartz" on the invoice and told it was a Schwartz. If I remember correctly, what's left of the tag has some part of the name on it yet, too.

Either way, it steers easier and is way stronger than the IH front with tie rods in front. And I can borrow any implement wheel/tire if I get a flat!

Steven,I will have to look at mine again. But it does like like the one you show in the picture. As you and CityBoy said it could be a swartz? Im assuming some one put this on a narrow front end tractor, right. It is not factory from IH. Like CityBoy said it is a better front end, I have seen guys who hit a tree or something and break the rods out front. thanks Jay

IH factory type wide front would be similar to this:

Started around about the time of Super MTA, 300, etc.

Schwartz looks like this:

Speeco wide fronts are similar to the Schwartz... there should be a tag on the aftermarket wide fronts.

Steven, I see that yours has the implement hub, like you you can use any tire. Mine has ths farmall style rims, with the 3 bolts that bolt it to the inner rim! So maybe a later IH front end? I will see if I can get some pics of it. And look for a tag on it. I put a pic on the tractor pictures on this site, but you cant see it to well.

Jay:
It could be you have an aftermarket, like a Swartz brand. Or, it could be that you have the newer IH style which was used on the Super H, 300, 350 etc. Either is generally considered better than the old style with the tie rods out front. mike durhan
