After three or four go arounds with AZ Tractor Guy, I put together ratios and speeds for M thru 660.

Here are the ratios:

M & SM standard first 44/19 = 2.31 ratio

M & SM low-low first 49/14 = 3.50 ratio

SMTA, 400, 450 first 52/21 = 2.47 ratio

560 standard first 54/19 = 2.84 ratio

Percent reduction of M/SM low-low over M/SM standard = 33% slower with LL gears.

Here are the speeds

MV standard first @ rated rpm = 2.00 mph

MV low-low first @ rated rpm = 1.34 mph

M & SM standard first @ rated rpm = 2.625 mph

M & SM low-low first @ rated rpm = 1.758 mph

SMTA first-high range @ rated rpm = 2.0 mph

SMTA first-low range @ rated rpm = 1.625 mph

SMTA with 560 first gear and low range @ rated rpm = 1.41 mph

Lower speeds on SMTA/400/450 can be achieved with 560 ring and pinion. Not sure if 560 ring and pinion (tranny mainshaft) will fit M/SM.

Even lower speeds can be achieved with 660 planetary hubs. I think the reduction is 25% off of 560 speeds with both running at the same rpm.

Data was derived from IH Parts Book TC-46 and Guy Fay's Data Book.

Speed reduction can also be achieved with an aftermarket auxiliary transmission. There were about 20 of these tractors in AZ. One of them sold on eBay two or three years ago. Looks like I didn't save the pictures.

I also think a home-made Hydro-Creeper could be attached to one of the pinion shafts. It would probably be easier to fit to a disc brake tractor. It would have to be a quick disconnect hydraulic motor with alot of displacement.

Most people walk at the rate of 3 to 4 mph. Or used to anyway. (except of course the people in front of me at a mall) I read that somewhere that they figure 15 to 20 minutes to walk a mile. That may be back from my army days too which was about 4 mph at a brisk pace. Horses will walk about 4 mph also.

Keeping up with a tractor doing 1.41 mph shouldn't be too difficult.

Very interesting. Maybe someone from California can shed some light on this. I have observed M Farmalls pulling wagons in the vegetable fields out there, and I was under the assumption that those Ms surely were equipped with the low, low first gear, but after reading the specs outlined above, those Ms had to be equipped with something else because of the super slow rate at which they were moving. To clarify, the Ms were being operated at wide open throttle pulling wagons through the field while several workers were harvesting broccoli by hand and tossing the bundles into the wagon, in fact, the tractors were moving slow enough that the driver got off and helped.

Those M's most likely had a auxillary truck transmission mounted in front of the original IH transmisson. There was a company that did the conversion. The center casting was scrapped and two large steel plates were bolted up to hold the auxillary trans and the tractor together... Not pretty, but functional. I have a seen a few in some of the California junk yards south of Fresno...

Possibly, although I think I would have noticed something like that. I would like to see some pictures of one of those conversions. If a person could do something similar, then I think those Farmall M V8 conversions could actually be a useful working machine instead of just a tractor ride/parade queen.

Take that up with Guy Fay. I just used his MPH numbers and did the multiplication. It doesn't matter as he used factory specified tires. I am trying to compare apples to apples as shipped.

However, I think the MV used 36" rubber and the rest used 38" rubber.
