Differential shims

I had to swap a bull pinion cage in my Super C (the old one had a crack in it). Can I just put the shims back the way they were, or do I need to worry about setting the gears again? The entire rear end is apart right now.

Also, the race in my replacement cage looks very clean. Is it OK to use that with the old bearings, or should I put in the matching race from my broken cage?

Thanks, Doug

Thanks guys.

I'm going to put the old race in my "new" pinion cage, and put everything back the way it was. Then I will check backlash & paint the gears to see what I've got. Everything is wide open in case I have to fiddle with it.

I found that anytime you try reshimming a used ring gear and pinion you wil make a noisy rear end. I would put it back as it was regardless of the backlash. Those numbers in the book are for new gears.

When I put the 'new' differential (same ring gear) in my H, I had to move one medium shim from the left to the right to get the backlash. It is quieter than before. It might be a little louder in reverse, but it only makes about as much noise as the hydraulic pump. As long as it is all open, it is easy to check.

you will also have to check the pattern on crown and pinion with blueing or the yellow paste,to make sure its in the right spot.

Doug,

Put the shims back where they were and see what you get for backlash on the ring and pinion. If it's not right, you'll have to reset them.

The bearing has run with the old race for a long time. I'd use the original race if it is in good shape.
