I looked at an A that had a narrow front, probably from a B, instead of the usual wide front. In order to return to original, does the lower casting have to also be changed?

Like Hugh said over the years these little tractors have had many changes what you seen was probably a B with left side diff housing removed and using diff shaft from an A you can move the wheel in works good with a belley mower as the rear is narrower than 6ft thus the mower sticks out on both sides. They didnot leave the factory that way.

Actually it's a 140, definitely not a narrowed up B, it has hydraulics. It was originally yellow.

Tom: Then someone has installed a B front casting on a 140. From 39 to 79 there were only 3 basic castings and there will all bolt to the front of a C-113, C-123, C-135 and even the C-153 engines. There were probably more than 3 part numbers, however 3 basic designs, A, SA, etc.; B and C, SC, 200, etc. C type will take narrow front, however steering shaft is on the left.

Tom: The front casting on an A and B are different. What you may have is a B that someone installed a short housing from an A on the left side. There is one not far from me, very much like yours and it is a B with what looks like A rear housing. Get gene bender's ear, I seem to remember discussion on here, and the idea was floated that some B's were sold that way. I'm just not certain what came out of the discussion.
