With all that conversation about plows and plowing, I finally found the quote I"ve been looking for:

----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----
"There is nothing more peaceful than plowing a field. Chances are that you will do your best thinking there"

Harry S. Truman
----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- -----

I don"t know if Harry plowed with horses or a tractor, but he"s right on both counts.

I read somewhere that one acre was originally defined as the amount of land one man and one horse could plow from sun up to sun down. Maybe that's an old wifes tale but I thought it was interesting.

One thing I learned about plowing was that mules are a lot smarter than horses. You wont founder MR Mule, but you can founder a horse. Dont ask how I know. Was about ten at the time. 30 CC

I bet he used horses. The tractors he would have most likley used (if they even had them) during "his time" didn"t have mufflers! Although I get a lot of thinking done even when I am on my noisy ones. Just pick out that spot on the horizon and head to it for a nice straight furrow and do nothing but think till you get there.

LA in WI: Harry S Truman was born May 8 1884 so he grew up with horses being used for most everything including plowing. It's stated that he moved back to farming in 1906 and farmed for 10 years. That just about had to be with horses. A couple years ago I walked behind a couple teams of horses plowing. There was a 2 horse team and a 3 horse team. About all I could hear was the squeaking of leather and soft hoof beats on the stubble ground. Very nice to observe. It looked like a very long long day for both the men and horses doing the plowing. Maybe thats why there weren't many fat farmers befor tractors? 1930-1950 movie star James Cagnie loved mowing hay with his Farmall H, as well as many other things in farming. There were a lot of good things to learn working with animals and growing food on a farm before the mechanical world took control of most peoples lives. Harry was right. ag

And, as you correctly wrote, his middle initial does not have a period after it, because his middle name is simply "S" Neat little trivia...
