This is a horrible photo sent to me via a cell phone. Whatever it is, I am going to buy it. It is a drag-type implement. Is it a cultivator or a harrow? Look at the spiked "shovels / discs". Could I add discs to this to make it a disc harrow?

Thanks for your help.

Tony

On cotton they were used for breaking crust on ground after packing rain to aid cotton to emerge. The rotary hoe would also kill very small seedling grass but we never ran them just for grass control. The hoes are very seldom used now but saw some running couple of years ago when cotton was having hard time breaking through. You could always tell if there were any old house places in field because if there were spikes would be full of old shoe soles.

It's a rotory hoe, to run through corn or beans, mainly after hard rain & soil is crusted over.

Checked Wendel. He said they were used for blind cultivation before emergence to get a head start on weeds.

Thanks for your help identifying it.

So this would be used only when the corn or beans were seedlings?

It will not kill anything but the tinyest weeds. That's why it can be used on corn or beans. They are tough enough that even when small the hoe won't kill them. They were used in this area to rough up sandy ground so it wouldn't blow. Once it rains and packs the ground down flat, the wind comes up and just like snow in a bizzard the blowing sand will cut the emerging corn or beans right off. But if you get out there fast and get the ground ruffed up a little it will stop blowing.

It's an old rotary hoe section and isn't worth the price of the snow covering it.

I think it's good you don't hold back, just say what you mean. Let all that anger out. Good therapy. Help you deal with all that criticism over trailers and trannys in gear, etc.... (:

Heck Dave,

Not an ounce of anger from this quarter. Just trying to tell the gent what he asked.

Can you think of a use for that thing other than a clumbsy boat anchor? :>)

You could pull a section behind a mower with some weight on it to aerate your lawn.;^)

Probably end up as electrodes in my stripping tank here but if you take it over to the Talers board I bet they could boggle your mind with suggestions. Maybe a memorial to that guy from Jaws? :-D

hmm....you nebraska guys farm a lot different out there than here in illinois. rotary hoe is real common here, though a lot bigger 3 point mounts now. you see em out after planting if you get a hard rain, the ground gets like concrete and beans and corn have trouble breaking thru the crust. slap er with the hoe and let em sprout, cuts the lil weeds off too. the old ones are good for aerating the yard. i have a 4 section i-h and a 4 section jd for yard aerating

It's the same here, but those old drag type weren't worth much even when they were new.

Heck, even the good 3-point models are getting to be awfully long in the tooth. :>)

Dont agree with that as they sure helped control weeds in their day also made first cultivating easier as there wasnt any crust and the ground moved real easy to get loose dirt between the rows as it wasnt in big chunks. Biggest thing was corn and beans could get a few inches higher so you didnt cover any hills up. Siol conditions vary in different areas also spring rains. We hoed lots of times and it would dry out the soil so you werent moving wet dirt when cultivating. Thats the way it was in the 40s and 50s before chemicals.

Why not? I am not paying more than scrap. If it is restorable, I am adding it to my collection.

Might as well get it. Sounds like in a few years everyone else will have scrapped theirs and you will have the only one left. By then everone will be hunting them and not find many, besides, it won"t eat much! If you do as nice a job on it as you did your plow it will look great!

Thanks Bob. You and I think alike. I haven't seen the hoe yet, but I am told it is IH!

With kind regards,

Tony

guess so. I use most of my equipment, but some things I like to restore just as collectibles of ag history. Not sure why that's seems to be such a shock...

I've seen those star shaped wheels used as yard art. They can be rather decorative.

You see old rotary hoe wheels on Epay from time to time. People pay 20$ to $40 each for lawn decorations!
