Super A - convert magneto to coil

I need to convert the SA from magneto to 12 coil and a matched electronic ignition module.

My reason for doing this is failing eyesight, now use a magnifying glass for reading and I need to be rid of contact points before it gets worse.

I have read the 12v conversion procedure and think I understand it. After that, I want to order an electronic ignition module and coill from this site.

The questions I have are 1) will the e module fit where the points are and 2) where to mount the coil?.

Can someone offer pointers?

Thanks in advance. Mike.

tn terry t, thanks for looking. have to say that I am not totally convinced that this mag distributor needs replacing. Basically the magneto provides voltage as does a battery coil. Not sure that it matters where the voltage comes from when it goes into that center tap of the distributor.

You are correct in saying that you can feed the output of an external coil into the center tower of the mag's cap, using it as a distributor.

HOWEVER, if you want a "battery ignition" that uses an "off-the-shelf" electronic igntion unit, you'll have to swap to an IH or Delco distributor conversion unit, the install the appropriate Pertronix EI kit.

Micheal, Since its an A which should be well able to crank over n start at the original 6 volts (use 00 Gauge battery n starter n ground cables n a biggggg gg heavy rated battery) Id leave it at 6 volts.

I agree with ny friends below, YOU NEED TO FIRST CONVERT FROM THE MAGNETO TO A REGULAR COIL DISTRIBUTOR IGNITION AND THENNNNN NNN CONVERT IT TO THE ELEC IGNITION. Once done then YES the elec switch unit fits easily right in place to replace the points n condensor. Then to get the most bang for the buck and to utilize the benefits the elec switch has to offer I highly recommend you use a high performance 6 volt coil (if they ofer one, otherwise use the stock 6 volt coil) as specified by the elec switch vendor that matches up with yur new elec switch.

MAKE SURE N BUY THE ELEC SWITCH FOR 6 VOLTS AND ESPECIALLYYYYY YYYYY YYY TO MATCH YOUR TRACTORS GROUND (Pos or Neg) and then buy a high performance 6 volt coil to match the switch if they offer one (or the stock 6 volt coil will still work)

Get a good working distributor,,,,, replace points n condensor with the new 6 volt CORRECT GROUND elec switch unit,,,,, ,,mount the new high performance or regular 6 volt coil,,,,, ,,wire it at the CORECT POLARITY (if Pos ground + wires to dist if Neg ground - wires to distributor) ,,,,, ,,,,, you will need an On/Off Ignition Switch of course installed near the dash (post back if you need help on that)

You may wanna check with Pertronix Ignition to see if they offer a 6 volt elec switch and if so at Pos or Neg ground??? then if they offer their own matching coil. AGAIN BE SURE N GET TEH RIGHT VOLTAGE SWITCH AND THE CORRECT GROUND. If they only offer Neg ground and youre at Pos ground you will have to convert over !!!!! !!

John T, it sure does get confusing for me.

"(if Pos ground + wires to dist if Neg ground - wires to distributor)".

Assuming a 6v + ground (current) the hot wire going to the coil would read -6v on a digital meter?. And go to the NEGATIVE terminal???. At close to $100 for the e module you sure don,t to melt it.it

As for the switch I reckon you are saying it,s a ground interrupt and not a voltage capable switch?

It.s a whole lot easier to envision how to wire the 12v - ground wiring.

Michael, IFFFFF youre at POSITIVE GROUND,,,,, The coils - terminal is what receives voltage from an Ignition switch when ON,,,,, ,,its other lil + terminal which normally wires to the distributor and its points now wires to the elec ignition terminal which now serves as the On/Off coil current switch and replaces the points opening n closing switch action. The e modules other terminal wires EITHER to the coils - or the ignition switches output which is hot when ON (thats the same point electrically speaking)

If you had a mag kill switch which served simply as a to ground connection to kill the mags spark thats NOT the same as an On/Off Ignition switch. It has a BAT input terminal (often fed from ammeters load terminal) and its IGN output terminal is what feeds hot batetry voltage to the coils - when its turned ON.

If you have a simple isolated two pole On/Off mag switch and neither pole is somehow grounded to the dash or the switches case or mounting etc it could be used as a two pole On/Off ignition switch with the BAT input wired to a hot voltage source (like the ammeteres load terminal) and the other IGN output wired down to teh coils - terminal so kts hot when ON

ITS BEST IF YOU STAY AT POS GROUND 6 VOLTS TO USE THE VENDORS WIRING DIAGRAM N NOT LISTEN TO ANY OF US HERE LOL

Be sure n use a e switch for POs ground if you keep the tractor at Pos grnd IF YOU WIRE IT WRONG YOUMAY LET THE SMOKE OUT

Thanks to every one for their advice.

This is a working tractor used entirely as a cultivator.

The battery is just about gone, been recharged a dozen times. I have decided that for me it's better to get an alternator at the local salvage yard and gog to a 12v system.

I will locate a used distributor and install the e module. In fact, the existing switch can be wired to break coil ground as some anti-theft devices do.

Thanks again for all the input. Mike.

I would not ground the coil between the distributor and the coil with the existing switch (unless it is advised as OK by the manufacturer of the Kit for electronic Ignition. There could be costly failure from grounding a terminal that is connected to the module that should have either Bat volts, or nothing. The switch would sure stop the tractor, but it would not shut it "off". JimN

Mike - I'm with you! Recommend setting up the tractor up for 12 volt NEGATIVE ground. Then replace the magneto with an IHC distributor and coil. Finally install a 12 volt negative ground electronic ignition kit in the distributor.

When you are done your Super A will be set up like virtually every modern automobile and truck. This drastically reduces the chances for a jumper cable polarity error (which can fry the electronic ignition...) should your tractor ever need to be jump started.

----

Check your local tractor boneyard for a distributor/coil assembly - or check on Ebay.

And if your magneto is still "hot" you can probably sell it for more than what you'll pay for a used distributor, thus dramatically reducing your finished cost.

The electronics in the "new" distributor will just take the place of the points. This means that it is wired normally, as John T point out. The interesting thing to me (and maybe it makes it easier in my head also) is that electrons flow from negative to positive, thus the effort in a positive ground system is to hurd them back to ground.
The original push pull mushroom switch will need to be replaced. It is a grounding switch and cannot have any hot (negative) wires attached as it will be a short to ground. New (stock, or stock looking) distributor switches are pricy, but available. If you are not looking to make a trailer queen, a high quality warer resistant single pole single throw keyed switch can be used to supply ignition volts. It should be atteched on the supply side to the load side of the amp meter. A five amp inline fuse in that wire is also nice. JimN

I do not think there is an electronic module to fit a Magneto. They are, in most cases designed to replace the breaker (points) plate in a distributor. The reason is probably because there is an issue with the impulse coupling and lack of centrifugal advance on the mag setup. The best option is to get a IH distributor for the SA then convert it to electoronic. (I think they make 6 volt electronic modules, so it might be possible to avoid the 12v conversion as well. Be sure to check the bushing wear in the distributor, as well as the advance springs and cam advance motion, some are stuck/broken. Good luck, JimN

Thanks to both you and Gene for the response. It sure is cheaper to avoid the 12v conversion. The 6v e module and coil are listed here. Thanks again, Mike..

If you think you need to change get an I-H dist as the Prestolite and the Delco-Remy mite be harder to get the kit. It will show where to mount the coil and how to mount.
