Which would you choose and why? It wouldn't matter if you could use it for your place or not I am talking about desire! I am not talking about the 1st or last one off the assembly line either I am talking about the Model line in general with whatever options were available for that model!

For the fun of it, giving realistic figures what would you be willing to pay for one that were somehow found in some dealers showroom brand new in todays dollars?

Joe

1.) 826 Hydro Diesel, Ice Cream Box cab, AC/Heat, wide and narrow fronts, to put my 234 on, as well as bale hay, use as a chore tractor, and to play with.

2.) Hands down, a 7488, but I would settle for a 7288. I think they were the best tractor never produced, my goal is to own one some day... I just don't think there would be a single machine in the world to better pull a moldboard plow, chisel plow, disk, or field finisher.

The thought of owning those two tractors almost makes me cry... what a dream.

Don't have room nor any use for any kind of tractor right now. For years and years I hankered for old tractors, and about 20 yrs. ago, bought 2 F-20s that ran decently. One was kept on my father's farm. One day when I was visiting, I decided to hook the old girl to the Bush Hog. The meadow I chose to cut was as lumpy as they come--full of those plants that grow in clumps and make "hassocks." Well, I had used an F-20 for years when I was a teenager, and had glorious memories of roaring across the fields, ripping up sod and probably destroying a spectrum of my hearing. I LOVED the old beast. My more recent experience was sobering. The noise was still there, and the ride was atrocious. The seat goes down when the front wheels go up, and the seat goes up when the front wheels go down. The steering wheel is heavy and acts like a flywheel if the front should get caught in a furrow (watch out for thumb or forearm). There is no really comfortable place for your feet, which are either up on the axle (your knees are then in your face) or down on the transmission case (your legs then bounce against the axle). Ah, my beautiful, romantic dream of returning to farming with really old tractors was shattered into a million shards. Still, if a guy at the next plow day offers me a couple of rounds, I wouldn't say no. It's no wonder, though, that people loved the H and M, which were like going from a Ford A to a Cadillac.

My baby B Dad bought new when I was thirteen. It still works for its keep. No field work any more, may have lost its hay raking job to a tractor with power steering (old age on my part) but it checks cows, pulls fencing trailer, and moves machinery around. And trains young tractor drivers well into the third generation now. Because there is a place to ride while you warn them to watch what they're doing.

To use probably a 7488. If found new on a dealer's lot I couldn't justify spending what it would be worth. For collecting an early friction drive IH would be the ticket, similar to the 1908 version that was shown on RFD last night. Same situation if found new, couldn't justify spending what it would be worth. Although a new 5488 with front wheel assist would be nice driver and a new SMTA diesel would be a nice show tractor.

What? No love for the 966 yet? The 966 gets my vote. It was the first "big" tractor (in my eyes) that I got to run as a kid. It's size was impressive to me then. Just the way it would seem to handle heavy tillage equipment so effortlessly. (So what if the equipment was a bit small for the tractor!) Ah, yes...my vote goes to the size 9 of the 66 series!

Joe: Having farmed with W4, Cub, H, SA, 300, 130, 560D, 504, 140, 656D and 1066DT, I'd have to say 656D. I often wished I'd bought an 856 or 1256. 56 series was the absolute best of IH, it was all down hill after that. Even drove me to Deere

easy question I have 4 tractors that i really want i like the looks and unique ness each has 1 is a 460 2 is a 560 3 400-450 diesil 5 is a 656 diesil

the 460 i love becuase it was a flaw in the history of farmall and there enginering team with the weak transmission but i love the new style of the boxy sheetymetal witht eh two tone paint, nad you cant forge that geat 6cyl engine

the 560 is just like the 460 except for the flaw in enginering

the 400-450 diesil becuase its a great tractor and i love the farmalls that you ahve to switch from gas to siesil and its the last in the leter series

656- geat tractor perfect in size for me and is just a sharp looking tractor

That's very simple...The biggest most costly tractor IH has ever made. Why you ask. I could sell it to someone for a discount, have enough money to buy the actual tractor I want, money to build a new shop to house it in, money to completly retore it, and money to take a vaction from work to use it.

I'd like to buy a 1256 brand new. Ours was rode hard and put away wet, but always did what we needed the next day. Pulled great, not too bad on fuel, easy to manuever and shift. I'd rather have a ROPS canopy than the cab.

Or maybe a 1206 with 56 series shifter installed...
