I am taking the mag off of my W4 to get checked over as well as the generator and starter. Is there a special procedure for removal? timing etc.? I have a I & T manual that says line up the first notch on the crank pulley with the indicator when installing it, for #1 cylinder top dead center, but it doesn"t say any special procedure for removal. Thanks in advance
Ken

You can just change spark plug wires until you get it right. Did it in the dark on road at night.

The easy way to remove and replace:

1. Hand crank the engine until you hear the impulse coupling click.

2. Scratch a small witness mark across the mag mounting flange to the engine block.

3. Take the distributor cap off and note which way the rotor is pointing.

4. Unbolt the mag and go do whatever needs to be done to it. DO NOT TOUCH THE ENGINE WHILE THE MAG IS OFF. LEAVE IT WHERE IT SITS.

5. When ready to remont the mag, turn it backwards until the rotor is pointing where it was at step 3.

6. Bolt the mag back in place and line up the witness mark.

7. Rotate the engine to verify the impulse clicks at TDC. It is unlikely that you will need to do any adjusting.

If you don't want to add scratch the witness mark, the impressions in the old gasket will probably be good enough. Without either, you just need to adjust the timing per the manual.

just remove the 2 3/8 bolts and take it off, should take 1 minute or less. when you want to install it look 2 pages down at the guy that cant get his tractor started, info is there.any body that knows how an engine runs should be able to figure out a simple thing as this.if you were stuck in the bush with no phone, no computer, no help, just tools and brains things would come together.why do so many people have a heart attack when the mag. has to come off? oh its the heart of the engine.

There is no special procedure for removal persay. Although, it would be a good idea to rotate the engine until the mag rotor is pointing to the #1 position on the cap, this will make installing it that much eaiser. I have rebuilt H4 mags for sale if you are interested.
