400 power steering hydraulic questions

I have Behlen power steering on my 400 and it works but not as as it should. I put a pressure guage on the outlet of the hydraluic control to see what oil pressure is available. My test set up, is a pressue guage just off of the supply point using a tee, and a hose with a valve in it that returns to the oil tank. With the valve open I get about 15 pounds and if I attempt to close that test valve, the pressure rises above the 60 pound maximum pressure for that guage I have. Any idea what pressure I should be looking for?

Second question. When it's cold out it takes some time before the hydraulic lift will work. I use Hy-Tran for the hydraulic system. Does anyone mix keroscene with the Hy-Tran in cold weather to thin it? Think it would help?

Thanks, Bob

You need a gauge that reads 1500PSI to check that tractors hydraulic system. It may not go that high, but mid scale on a gauge is best accuracy. Do not put Kero in the oil. It will not assist the problem, and will contaminate the properties of the oil. Thinner oil is harder for a pump to make pressure with. The issue may be in the screen in the reservoir. If partially plugged, it will cause the weak action when cold. How long has the fluid been in the system? New fluid might just help a bunch. Be careful not to get air in the system when changing it.
