just thought of something. is this a new tractor to you? it may have an optional reverser on the left side instead of the TA and that would give the situation you describe if that was the only lever you are moving (F forward and R back). the shift lever is on the right side of the dash and is a typical IH 5 speed:

r 2 4 on top/forward --n-- center 1 3 5 on bottom/back

(hope my text picture turns out)
the reverser models do not have a reverse on the speed shifter.

On the 656 the pin that goes through the cross shaft can become worn & drop between the shifter arms & lock it up.Just something to check.

If the 666 is like the 656 your problem is under the seat. The linkage starts at the shifting column and goes down and over to under the seat. What happens is the shifting piston shafts get corroded or dirty and won't let you slide the shifter side ways. You can try to put some WD40 or such on them and try working them loose. If that don.t work then off comes the whole seat and it's time to take things apart and clean or replace stuff.

666 is identical to 656 Farmall. 656 International is completely different animal, although 70% similar to the farmalls...

Ah the shifter is on the right side of the dash support and the shift rails are under the battery tray.

Yep and if I remember right the seat sits on top of the battery box and under all this we found the rods that were in bad shape and wouldn't slide in and out. BTDT Len

Everything is under the battery tray down by your feet as the battery is behind the kick plate at the bottom of the dash support . On the german made utility's the shifter is under the seat.

Sure ain't much to that shifter. Just a slide rod that goes thru the three shift levers and it has a pin to move the levers . So if it is not sliding then i would start looken where the shift lever goes down into the yoke as there maybe something blocking it to keep it from sliding the rod.
