Need to put new intake/exhaust gaskets on my 340, gas engine. Leaking exhaust for sure in the middle, maybe between 2 & 3. Have new ones from CNH, looks like not much more than thick paper.

Don"t remember what I used in "96, maybe the blue stuff. Maybe 12 years isn"t too bad, but just curious what others are using, maybe it will last a little longer this time.

Thanks. Edward

I have to go with Bob up there, in a pinch / emergency I'll use some Permatex Make-a-Gasket, but if I'm in the shop in tear down mode, I'll clean and put nothing but a new gasket in there. Especially since that anything else you put on there, may cause a sticking situation that assures gasket destruction the NEXT time you try to pull it off. Nope, gotta go with metal-gasket-metal IMO.

I do not think an silicone or epoxy based stuff will hold up to exhaust manifold temps. Heck it will even melt solder out.

there might be something similiar to stove sealer for woodstoves that would work. But it gets brittle and would not handle engine vibrations I think.

I'd take the manifold to a shop and have it planed or milled perfectly flat. Better to attack the problem than the effect.

I'll ad to Gordo's idea that a good straight edge Nice level, or (ideally) a surface plate will tell the flatness issue. The head can be off flat as well, bur a straight edge is better than pulling it off to use a surface plate, :-) JimN

I wouldn"t use anything in there but the gasket. That is what the gasket is for, to make a good seal between parts. If it is clean and not pitted up or warped it will seal. If it doesn"t seal there is a problem with the parts like dirty mating surface (old gasket and or sealer stuck on), pitting and or warping. Been my experiance if anything else is put on , it is a recipe for trouble down the road. Just remember to retorque it after is is hot and cools back down a couple times.

They make a 2 part stuff that works well. You have to be sort of fast bolting it up but once done its hard as rock and works well

I think it's the orange colored stuff if I remember right... Check out any decent auto parts store and buy the highest temp stuff you can. The blue stuff is not made for high temps.

napa has a pretty good exhaust gasket sealer. i used it on my back hoe, the port was a little rough from years of leaking by the previuos owner, new manifold, gaskets and some sealer and good as new.
