Last week I picked up my F-20. The seller started it right up and when he went to move it out of the Hangar the clutch would not disengage. 3 of us pushed up to about 2-3mph and he synched it into 1st gear; then when He got out of the Hangar he pushed in clutch and held brakes and presto the clutch was unstuck. He advised blocking the clutch open to keep from sticking. I am not sure if this is a good idea. What's the thoughts out there? I wont start this but every couple of weeks.
Thanks Randy
ps: The tractor serial number and the engine # are not the same. Is this the way they were produced?

VA Gasman,
I have had mice get inside the bellhousing through the timing hole in the front. They built a nest and wet in there and made a mess. You can pull the little plate off the bottom of the back cover, There are two bolts to remove it and check things out. Some guys over greased the throw out bearing this would be a good time to clean extra grease out of there. I would not put something to hold the clutch down it will compress the springs in the pressure plate that might weaken them in my opinion. The serial number is in three places, Tag on tool box, motor block, and frame rail all three #'s match on my tractors.

I have heard both sides of the weak spring argument. Mechanical Engineer friend said that good springs will not be weakened if stored compressed or with tension. To many "old boys" have been doing it for too many years for it not to work. I don't think they'd want to make more work for themselves long term if it weakened the springs to block a clutch.

moseed,
I have pulled the valve springs off F-20's that sit for years not running the springs that the valve"s set compressed on will be shorter than the noncompressed on the same head. this was why I said what I did about blocking the clutch.

In regards to the serial numbers; the one on the ID plate and the rail match but the one on the engine is different. Does this mean the block has been changed?

If the klock number is different from the other numbers on a F-20, most likely the block has been changed. Someone may have left water in it some winter - Dad did - and it was damaged beyond repair.

Some tractors came with a block, when new, to hold the clutch pedal down, so that the clutch would not rust to in place.

So it must be OK.

It will not hurt a thing to block the clutch down.

You don't have to hold it all the way down, just away from the flywheel, couple inches....
