pre-start check list? I think it's ready to go!

For those of you who thought my April Fools joke was real, it's not. Today I finally got my new 1/0 battery cables crimped. I'm going to pour some solder in to the open parts to solidify the ends. I got gas... at $3.53 a gallon :? for the tank. I haven't poured the gas in yet. But I will when I'm ready to try to crank it tomorrow. I need to fill up the recently fixed radiator with water as well.
Back in November, when I originally gave it a shot, I put about 2 teaspoons of oil on each cylinder head and worked it through.
What do I need to check, or do, before I give this H a start?

Set up the video recorder on a tri-pod and let er run while you attempt to start it. That way we will know what happened to you and we can warn others on what not to do
Good luck with it Mike!

P.S. Be sure and let your wife know how to post here

I primed the pump when I installed the new oil pan back in November. Hopefully everything is still set to go.

To re-prime the system, crank it over a bit with the spark plugs out so some oil gets pumped up to the top end and the bearings before you fire it up!

Can't wait to hear the good news!

You said, "fill er up with water". Was that a typo? If not, you really need the 50-50 water anti freeze coolant. Or at least 25-75anti freeze.

Gordo, there is so much scale in the water system, I'm going to run it with straight water for a bit, then add a water system cleaner that is supposed to break down scale, then drain it, then refill it with 50/50.

Outside with the muffler on it to allow you to hear things, and keep peace. Just enough gas to get the sedement bowl filled, and block the tires from rolling. The other advice below is good as well. (I assume you primed the oil system as we discussed weeks ago) Waiting with great anticipation of whoopla heard around the world.Jim

Before we use any tractors, let's take a moment to talk about shop safety. Be sure to read, understand, and follow all the safety rules that come with your tractor. Knowing how to use your tractor properly will greatly reduce the risk of personal injury. And remember this: there is no more important safety rule than to wear these — safety glasses.

Norm has always kept me safe:)

You're takin' a well-deserved beatin' here (heheheheh!), but it's (mostly) good advice.

No kiddin', I'd move it outside for the test run. I'm a firm believer in ANY shop (or kitchen, for that matter) havin' an adequate fire extinguisher, so be sure to have a clear path to one of those.

Before you put any fuel in her, crank her a few times (OUT OF GEAR, please!) keepin' an eye for sparks, especially at the switch and on top of the starter.

If there's much of a downhill slope to your driveway, you might need to put a couple or three gallons of gas in, enough so that you can see gas flowing into the sediment bowl, but don't fill it until you know the system is tight. It's much easier to drain a small amount from the tank if you have to make repairs.

If, as you get tinkerin' and adjustin' after it's been runnin' for a while, don't neglect to add fuel, A fella I know personally (Odd! Can't think of his name , but I think it started with an S.) once devoted an embarrassin' amount of time chasin' the reason for his engine shuttin' down while adjustin' his timin', when the only problem was that the tractor had run out of fuel.

Equally embarrassin' things are forgettin' to open the valve on the fuel line or (Horrors!) turn on the ignition (Why is all that gas drippin' from under my carb??).

Of course, once runnin' properly, she'll need to go for a test spin. 2nd is a good gear for a first run. Don't even think about road gear for now. If there's any appreciable traffic in your neighborhood (I think you're in town, not out in the country), you should spend as much time looking over your shoulder as ahead. Yield (pull over, stop, wave by (if safe after checking ahead) anybody that runs up on you.

I've no idea what the law is in California, but if the constabulary is particularly or overly present in your town, I wouldn't venture out far or often without a triangle on the rear, just to be legal.

Happy Motoring!

Be sure there is gasoline to the carburetor and be sure the distributor has good spark.

Magneto will come later. It has a distributor right now.

Make sure you have the air intake pipe from the carburetor to the air cleaner installed and clamped. This will help suppress fire in case of a backfire.

Put the gas in first thing, that way if there are any leakes that show up while you put the water in, you will find them before sparks or the fan blows the gas around. I would just go over all connections as a double check on fuel and electrical. Look over things like the fan belt and make sure nothing is in there like a rag that the fan can grab. make sure all the tools are out of the way. Kind of do an over all check of things like you would when pulling the red flags off an aircraft. If you want to check spark just hook up an old spark plug to one of the plug wires and set it where the base of the plug will be grounded and watch it as it cranks, but I wouldn"t worry so much about that unless the engine doesn"t start after a few cranks. Just in case your post today "tempts Karma" have the fire extinguisher handy and the hose also! I would try to start it first without choke and if it doesn"t go, then choke it a bit to keep it from flooding until you get the carb set right. #1 rule is be sure it is in neutral and be safe, easy to be distracted by all the checking and anticipation. Are you going to have it at the Toulare show?, I think I may make it to that with the 23 Olds truck while I am out that way. Be neat to see a show in a different area. They use a lot of equipment out there I am sure will stump me as to what it is!

Bob, if all goes well I'll have it at Tulare. I've already contacted the IHC President asking we do a special ceremony at the end of the annual meeting. That will be early Saturday morning. If you could make it for that, that would be really nice! If not, hopefully I'll see you there at some point.

In Navy aviation, that's how you kill people and ruin equipment. I have to be meticulous and make sure I check and recheck what has been done. Sorry if your anxiety can't handle it. Hopefully I'll have good news tomorrow, and you can get some decent sleep again.

I don't want my fire joke to come true. How do I test for a hot spark without killing myself?
