The farmer I grew up helping is giving me the old 1466 I learned how to drive a tractor on and I know it has a problem in the transmission. It started knocking nearly 15 years ago only in the low range and was never fixed. He started using the tractor in high range for light duty operations such as shredding. If it was something really major I would think the transmission would have stopped a long time ago but it is still going and going (which I hope continues when I get it since I plan to use it to start farming part time). What do you guys think might need to be repaired and how much do you think it would cost. I don't have a shop so I know I'll have to hire it done.

I just thought of another question. If this is indeed a chipped gear tooth would it be a huge mistake to run the tractor as is and just ignore the noise or go ahead and get the thing fixed? I know it would be best to get it fixed before putting it through major work but I'm looking at running smaller equipment that my JD 3020 will pull but with difficulty so I might even be able to run in H1.

You can figure on right at $5K.

At least that's what mine cost the last time I had it done anyway.

Most likely a broken tooth on a gear in the range transmission. In high range the speed transmission output shaft is coupled to the pinion shaft in the rear end so no power is transmitted through any of the range transmission gears. You would most likely be able to see the problem if you remove the cover on the left side of the rear frame just in front of the brakes. Any repair involving replacing any of those gears means a complete disassembly of the rear frame. The differential has to be removed before you can take out the pinion shaft.

Flat rate for range transmission overhaul is 15.7 hours without a cab. Most likely there will be some final drive bearings that need replacing so any of that type of work is in addition to the 15.7 hours.

Thanks guys, the broken tooth theory has come up more than once now so that sounds like one of the best possibilities without having the tractor and mechanic in hand yet. I've been told there is a local private mechanic that is pretty reasonable on prices so hopefully I can get it done reasonably. I have always felt the labor will be major for something that is probably a "minor" repair.
