I have painted my M with the TSC Valspar brand of International Red and am well pleased with the results. I have one thing left to do, and that is to paint the rims. I am going to brush them since it's a working tractor and I can avoid the overspray issue as well. Problem is, my TSC store carries only Ferguson gray, and a Ford gray... are either of these close enough to pull off or is there something else I should use? Thanks for your help! Oh yeah.. already brushed the wheels with IH Red, just got to get the gray on the front and rear rims.

Re: Rim paint for Farmalls - - psudo galvanized look in reply to IHKYguy, 04-18-2008 01:43:39
At Lowe's, I found some "Hammered" silver brush on Rustolem paint. Has the consistency of an enamel (sliver is typically pretty thin), and dries with a hammered look, kinda like the flakes of a galvanized finish.

Paint in the shade and not hot sun. You need to allow it to dry slowly for the hammer effect to become more pronounce.

Did this on my W-30 and kinda like the effect. Not quite as bold as regular silver either.

I have a Farmall 1954 SH and the rims are more of a white color and I know this tractor has not been re-painted in its life.

IH used an off white in the number series tractors.

I think the off white looks good and was going to clear coat over that.

If your bolts aren't stuck too hard its not too bad to take the rims off the centers and spray the rims, just use a 2 foot piece of valley tin to shield the tires from overspray. Lee

In the oil field we use aluminum paint from a regular paint can and apply it with a rag. Use a soft cloth and soak it with the paint and simply rub it on. No runs, smears, etc. Use latex gloves to protect hands. Works great! A quart will paint a bunch. Works very good on pipe fencing too! bob f.

Originally the rims were not painted, but were galvanized plating. The Silver Argent from IH looks good, and goes on nice.

What realy looks great is getting the paint from I-H then clear cote after realy gives a nice finish just take some time and mask the tires you will like the finish. Even just spraying the I-H SILVER has a nice look.

Aluminum paint is the most used.

What are we talking here, just "aluminum" paint, or a gray paint made for aluminum? I apologize for my ignorance on this subject, I really appreciate the help with my project.

The paint is a very bright silver color. It may actually have aluminum in it. I think you will find it on the same shelf as where you found your other paint. There is no description of color other than "aluminum". Be advised that "aluminum" paint is somewhat thin, and has a real tendency to run if applied to heavy. Several thin coats applied with some drying time between each coat would be the correct procedure.
I buy it in quart cans, and apply it with a good quality soft brush. Experiment a little and eventually you will know how to get the final results with absolutely no brush marks.

In reading past posts on this subject, Rustoleum Alumimum paint seems to be favored. Any comments on this?

Rust-o-leum is as good as any. I don't remember the brand name on the last can I bought, but it was probably Van-Sickle.

Yep, We use Rustoleum Hammered Alumimum and it looks real good. But they are not used in the field, so don"t know how long it would last.

I find it much simpler to just brush it on.
