What is wrong with running E85 in the H? Gas at $3.45 here and I'm going nutz...as well as broke! Any issues with E85 I wonder? I always put about a pop can sized can with diesel in a full take too...someone told me that it helps lube the valves

E85 may be an alternative to gasoline, but it is not a good value. I experienced a mileage drop from 18 to 14mpg when I ran a couple tanks thru my truck last summer. There is less BTU's per gallon, so for the same horsepower needs, you will go thru more e85 than gasoline. Thus, my cost per mile jumped up.

Now, another question: Being e85 is mostly corn alcohol, why does it's cost basically follow the ups & downs of gasoline? Shouldn't it's price be based on something different than the cost of a barrel of oil ? Something's fishy here.

Pete, You are right about "fishy"! I hear so much about the price and why "everything" goes up like price of corn, then gas, then corn, then gas..."hedge-funds" in oil so 10-billion proffit is actually good for other retirment funds you may have $ in...blah blah blah! I'm just ticked! Our farmers made good on the 1st year of rising corn prices, now fuel, land rent, seed and chemical for the fields doubled...lucky I work the the County and not farming or ind-trucker, eh? So, guess my hobby "H" will get the liquid gold and I'l buy one less case of beer, eh?

I agree since it is only 15% gas the price shouldn't vary so much. But I disagree about price per mile being higher if your mileages were correct, this AM E85 was 2.599 and E10 was 3.499 which gives about a penny per mile edge to E85

Yeah Gary, but if you've got to run around to find it, you end up behind the curve anyway. Especially if the difference is only a penny. Two or three miles out of your way to find an E85 pump is all it takes to offset your savings....

I ran E85 in my Farmall M all last summer. I had zero issues. Didn't eat the rust out of the tank, plug filters, nor did it destroy the neoprene needle valve in the carb. Maybe it takes longer then three months. I had to richen up the carb some and it used a bit more fuel.

Make sure you have the solid needle valve the neoprene tipped ones last long. I have run several 5gal cans of it thru my M at probably a 50/50 mix.

I have used the 10% ethanol for more than 30 years in eveything I own without any problems. It appears there are no economical reasons to use E85. Although the cost per gallon is less, the cost per mile in highway vehicles is greater due to the 20-25% loss in MPG. I would assume a similar or greater loss of fuel efficiency in older tractors.
I have also seen reports stating that there is a 10% loss in MPG when using the 10% ethanol. If that is true, then adding 10% in volume and reducing MPG by 10% results is no reduction in the consumption of gasoline. In dollar savings, you are further ahead to drink the alcohol and get too drunk to drive and leave your car in the garage.
It's just a no win situation for the consumer. K-Mo

Don't tell anyone. but I run an SC Case on it. Just open the load screw until it runs right, it will clean ALL the rust out of tank and lines, so use a filter right at carb. I dump a quart of filtered drain oil in 10 gal. of gas.

You'll likely need to rejet your carb, as the fuel/air ratio is about 8:1 vs. 13:1 for gasoline. All the other comments about Ethanol eating rubber should be heeded as well. If it sits in the tank long, it will draw moisture from the air and create this slimy stuff in the tank... You'll also use more of it than straight gas. If you can buy it for 2 bucks a gallon, it will far offset that, but if you're not careful it will either run really lean or not at all..

Just to ad to Andrew's comment,
You should be fine most gas has up to 10 pecent ethonal in it all ready, the only bad thing that i have found is that it doesnt last long long at all, so if your keeping it for a while in a tank make sure to put a can of stabil in with it. This is espicall true in smaller engines been have all kinds of trouble with them but not really much on the larger engines.

From what I have read, it will attack certain types of rubber fuel line. It will not harm metal fuel lines or gas tanks. The octane should be fine for an old Farmall. mike

As far as I know all it will do is eat out the fuel lines because its so corrosive. I wonder if someone could make stainless steel fuel lines and then it should work. The gas tank should also probably be lined to keep it from being eaten. My great uncle has run strait 90%gas 10% ethanol in his tractors for years and he hasnt notices anything. Could give it a try and see what happenes I guess.
