I just repainted and rewired my 1943 H. I struggled with ability to shut the motor off with the switch after I removed the diode in the 12volt converson that was in-place. So now, after you all helped me, I wired it up, it shuts off. However, I need to pull-sart or jump as the battery is dead-worthless and after a cold start, it goes down the driveway, one block, then sputters and quits. The coil is warm or even hot to touch. I put in-place a ceramic resistor before the coil. No difference...the warmer the motor, the shorter it runs. My coil was supposed to have a built-in resistor. So, now what...coil...condenser/points or does the battery even make a differenct? What am I missing? The motor runs so smoothly and then...sputters and dies quickly, even with a ceramic resister. What did I do wrong? Thanks, Dan.

Sounds like you need a battery.

If there is a dead (worthless) battery in it, that is the issue. Even correctly operating charging systems need a good battery to regulate charge rates, and system voltage. If the battery is bad, the coil may be getting 20 volts! Make sure (with a good battery) that charge voltage is at 14.2 to 14.6 volts, and then lets go from there. JimN

probably have a 6v coil instead of 12v.thats why its getting hot and stopping.thats what happens with conversions.whats wrong with factory set up?

Since you say the battery is dead and worthless after the engine dies, I suspect the charging system is not working. You mention a 12 volt conversion so I am led to believe that you have a distributor not a mag. A distributor requires battery voltage to run. If the battery goes dead the tractor will die. Just my thoughts, and please remember they are worth exactly what you paid for them.

If after checking all the things suggested about the fuel, if you are still having a problem, replace the condenser. relatively inexpensive, and can produce the symptoms you indicated.

Grab the choke when it STARTS to sputter, if it briefly picks up you have a fuel problem. Does it die in about the same time not moving ? Get a spark plug tester (gap type), connect one end to a plug the other to its wire, set back and see if there is spark jumping when it sputters and dies.

I also suspect a fuel flow problem. Try the choke test.

However, it is possible to fry a coil very quickly if it's not meant to take 12V.

Check for good fuel flow. Sound like about one carb bowl full to me.
