Usually this is caused by a bad pilot bearing on the front of the mainshaft. It rides inside the input shaft and when the bearing gets worn it no longer holds the mainshaft and input shaft in alignment allowing the fifth gear spline to walk apart under a little load. If the bearing is good the splines can be quite poor on both the input shaft and fifth gear and still not cause a problem.

Fifth id a sliding spline engagement from the input shaft to the output shaft.
It is (in almost every case)worn where the 4th fifth sliding gear meshes with the splines on the input shaft.
There is really only one fix, and that is to pull the top off of the tranny, take out the belly pump, the clutch shaft, the front bearing carrier, the constant mesh gear/input shaft, and the forth/fifth sliding gear. It does not require a split. Be very careful with loose roller bearings in the intermediate bearing, and other small parts, they fall into oblivion if not caught in a cloth.
The gear splines, and shaft splines can be welded up, and machined back to normal length, but it is a very serious job for a machine shop.
The best route is to find used good gear/shaft and replace them. JimN
