I have a farmall 140 it has a hyd whine in the smaller of the two lines it seems to be in the line half way between the pump and and the unit or a vibration is this normal?Do they all do this? There are no leaks and the unit works fine the oil level is ok but I have not service the unit or is something out of adjustment ?

Dan: Does the pump, lines or touch control unit get excessively hot? I sounds as though this tractor may be new to you. Have you changed the hydraulic fluid and cleaned the screen in the sump of the touch control unit?

You are correct the tractor is new to me and have not service the hyd unit. they do get
warm not really hot is this noise because their is a restriction to the pump possbily the filter screen is plugged ?

Dan: The screen is on the suction side of the pump, and yes a restricted flow at the screen will cause a whine. It's also very hard on the pump as good oil flow lubricates the pump as well as creates hydraulic function. Very likely you've not hurt anything yet as you are getting enough oil circulation to give you hydraulic function.

Personally I'd drain it, plug on left at bottom near battery. The screen is that recessed circle held in by 4 1/4" bolts. Hopefully the screen has not collapsed. Clean it and fill the unit with fresh Hy tran. Remember when you fill it, have both roskshafts in rear position. Fill to the bottom of the fill hole. With fill plug out, tractor idleing, put the hydraulic levers full stroke 1/2 dozen times, returning to rear position. Check level again, it may be down as oil replaced air in the system. Do not overfill, and don't operate tractor any more than you have to until you do that hydraulic oil change.

Hey thanks for the great info.I will let you know as soon as I drain the hyd unit and ck the screen
I will also ck the pressure readings and let you know as soon as I can. Sounds like pump cavitation
