H alternator choice troubles

Hey guys,

I'm trying to finish the 12 volt conversion that somebody hacked up on the 51 H that I just acquired. It was basically set up to start and run off of a 12 volt battery, but that's it; it had no charging system, and the original 6 volt generator was missing.

Due to my budget constrictions, I decided just to slap an alternator on it, but it apparently isn't that easy. I got a small Delco alternator off a '93 Skylark and a Hitachi alternator off an 85 Nissan pickup. Both of these are way too big to fit under the hood of my H without cutting the sheet metal. I really really don't want to cut it in, so does anyone else have any recommendation? I'm really at a loss here.
I guess I'm just wondering what is the absolute tiniest alternator that you know of? Alternatively, if you have an H that you've converted to 12 volts, can you post a picture of the mounting of the alternator and tell me what the alt is off of?

Thanks a ton folks!

Here's an excellent article to help you. I converted a IH 240 U a couple years ago using all info here and have been very pleased. David.....Link

Let me put in plug for us lazy types the generator on my 12 volt M has not worked in years and I get along fine without it. I just hook it up to charger overnight every time I park it. Went out this morning and it fired right up on first try after sitting since October, put charger on it while I was greasing and checking things out, went out and bush hogged for 3 hours and it ran perfect and it does have battery ignition.

I will add to what Ed said.

Use lots of penetrating oil on the set screw and pulley threads. Take your time, it's easy to mess up the slotted set screw.

Use a brass punch to lightly tap the pulley loose.

If you break that pulley you will have a real mess

Excellent, thanks for the tips!

I'm going to spend my weekend willing a 10SI to fit and work. Now that I know how to get the belt off, I should be in business!

Thanks again gang!

Yeah, that was my thread. With the pictures in it. Now that I went back and re-read the thread, I think I'll just take back both of these that I have and get me a 10SI and start over again.

Oh, while I'm here, can anyone explain to me how to get the fan belt off? I don't have a manual for the H yet, since I'm pretty short on funds right now. I'll get one soon, but I'd really like to be able to get the alternator on this weekend, so as long as I can get the fan belt off, I'll be in business.

Thanks guys!

Removing the fan belt on one of these is a little strange. There is a 2 piece pulley on the fan blade. Loosen the set screw and unsrew the pulley until it is as wide as it goes. This should give you enough slack in the belt to roll it off the crank pulley. After that, it's just a matter of wiggling the betl past the fan blade. Just as a precaution, it's a good idea to pull off the coil wire when doing this because you will probably turn the crankshaft and you definately DON'T want the engine to start by accident.
As for mounting the alternator, I crammed a 66 amp GM unit between the valve cover and the hood. To keep tension on the belt, I used an idler pulley. It works very well. I have also seen brackets fabricated to mount the alternator to the goveroner housing on the other side of the engine. The alternator is not under the hood, but unless the tractor will be out in the weather a lot, this may be a good choice.

A regular Delco will fit, as well as the smaller ones. Look over on the left under Parts and Pieces and there is a picture of a Delco installation titled Farmall H - Alternator. A few days ago there were several other pictures of an installation on the discussion board, if you look back in the posts. Good luck!
