Ya have any of the old harness to work with???? If ya do then use my trick of building a new one . I use a 2foot by 8 foot piece of plywood and lay out the old harness on it and use finish nails to hook the old wires streched out and hook the ends over the nails . Then strip off the cover and see what color wire and size of wire and mark it on the board . IF it has and alt. i use a 10 Ga. for the main wire from the hot post of the alt. to the amp gauge then from the amp gauge to the starter . Then after i have all the layout work done i remove the old harness and start laying out the wires to each nail on the board . Myself i use uninsulated ends then i use a real good heat shrink over the ends or terminals to give the factory look . IF ya have wires that were broken off the org. harness then leave them long and finish them once on the tractor for the correct length . One trick that i do for a generator to alt. change over is i use a cv relay to energize the alt. and forget the ligthbulb or diode . As for the wire loom after years of tracing it down i found a wire supply house that i could get the factory style loom and with practce one can make a real factory look to it .

WHY spend the $$$$ for a realy, when a diode is less than a buck, and BETTER for the alternator????

Don't know just the way i do it. Use the CV relays on a lot of tractors . Like on the 06-66 to take the load off the light switch when ya start adding extra lites , i do away with the fuse and add breakers and a CV relay. Started doing that after i had a problem with one 706 i had and on a vary dark night miles away from pick up and NO FLASH LIGHT no lighter stumbling around plowed ground because i blew the fuse . But i did have a couple extra in the tool box on the tractor it was just trying to get to the tool box then trying to put the fuse in by the braille method only to go one round and have them go out again just because i added ONE extra light on the rear . So replaced that fuse and had two left and before i got to the head land one more went . Unpluged the one rear lite shut down the field lites crossed my fingers and headed to the other farm where the truck was at . just as i pulled into the lane that fuse let go . Part of the problem was rust on the hot post of the light switch plus the extra lite . That is when i started usen the CV relays then just used them when we made the change from gen to alt . seems to work ok had no problems So if it ain't broke don't fix it. Plus never knew much about all them fancy diodes .

As bob mentions.. the excite line really is a negligible power draw.. as once the power comes up and the alt is generating.. it is no longer 'drawing' from the excite source ( ignition switch.. etc.. )
