I finally got a line on a used sickle mower that fits my budget. I think the owner told me it was a #37. The only thing I'm wondering, and he is too, is will it work on a 1020? I thought If he used on a 3pt on his John Deeres, It ought to work on mine. Does anybody have any experience with these mowers?HJ

I use a #37 to cut Coastal Bermudagrass and it does a fine job. Mike is right - it is a pull-behind model. Hydraulic lift was an option. The #37 could have a 7ft. or 9ft. bar on it. One other thing to know if you purchase this unit is that it has 3 possible pulley ratios. Know which one you have BEFORE you need to buy a belt for it (experience). I prefer to use the old style rock guards with the ledger plates and top serrated sickle sections. If you keep the cutting edges in good condition you can cut hay as fast as you can stay in the seat. A pull-behind mower is a little harder to maneuver at the corners and around trees and power poles but very easy to hook up. And yes, you can make a square corner with it if you're moving slow enough and the crop isn't terribly thick.

Jim, just to clarify- the 37 is a pull-type mower that replaced the No. 11. The 38 is the semi-mount mower that replaced the No. 8 and 8W, and the 39 is the 3-point mower that replaced the No. 9 and 9W. Hope this helps. Mike

Thanks Mike, I haven't looked at the mower yet, the fella that is selling it said he hadn't used it in several years now and said he thought it was a #37. He did say though, that it had a pitman and a belt. He offered it to me when he heard I was looking for a mower. It ought to be in good shape, none of his equipment sees any weather.

I am correcting myself on the post, the 39 is the 3 point mounted. I suppose the 37 is the integral mounted and the 38 is the wheel mower.

the 37 is a 3 point mower, is belt driven from PTO but still has a pitman. They are smoother than the old #9 however leave lot desired when compared to the 350. I'd put my money is a good 350, have had all the above mowers and currently use a 350. #38 was the pull type mower.

My memory is fuzzy as to whether the 37 is a full 3 pt mount or a semi mount with a castor wheel. But anyway make sure the clamps that attach midway up the 3pt hitch arms will fit the style of draft links that your 1020 has. Two styles were available ifn I remember rite. Flat sided was standard and square-extendable an option. Ifn you hook it up to your Deere leave the clamps loose. Then raise the mower slowly and make sure nothing is binding. Then tighten it up.

Our 1020 has the flat sided arms, I didn't know that you could get the extendable arms on that small of a tractor. Thanks for your help.

I'm almost positive that this is a pull type sickle mower that has nothing to do with a 3pt. It has its own set of wheels and you hook on to it with a hitch pin and your pto shaft. IT has a hydraulic cylinder as well that operates the same as a 3pt mounted one would.
HOpe this helps.

I currently have, and still use my model 37 mower. This is a pull type, 2 tire mower. Mine still has the original paint showing "model 37" very clearly. Parts for this unit are readily available at most farm ag stores. I have a picture of it if you would like to see it, just email me. Best of luck. Gary
