How are they doing so far ???

First, does anyone know how the Duramax diesel is doing so far? Any positive or negative things happening in the marketplace? Have they proven themselves so far to be the equal of the Dodge or Ford diesels?

Second, here's an interesting story. A friend of mine is a new vehicle salesman for a local GM dealer in Edmonton, Alberta. It seems that some wheeler dealers are attempting to buy the trucks up here with Canadian dollars, then (however it's done) deliver it to the U.S. where they supposedly get pretty much the same dollar value for it but in US dollars (which are worth 50% more to a Canadian). So if you bought something here for $100 Canadian and sold it there for $100 US, that's $150 Canadian in your jeans. Apparently they're pretty careful who they deal with and one clue is the buyers want the truck with no extra dealer options (just the way it comes off the trailer) and they always pay cash. Some of them apparently even get older women to buy for them if they can. Supposedly the dealers get their knuckles rapped pretty hard from GM for selling to these characters and if it happens too often, they have a hard time getting any stock. Just thought that might be interesting to some of you, I don't know for sure how much (if any) of it is true.

I don't think the entire story on DMax will be out for a year or two yet. The Dodge cummins is noted as a 400,000 mile engine.
As of yet the most miles I have heard on a DMax is about 130,000. My DMax crew cab has just over 200 miles on it and it is just less than a week old.
All the reports and storys will be around until the solid evidence comes out(give us a few hundred DMax's out there with 300 - 400 thousand on them and let that speak for itself.

The only problem is with the allisons. Allison underesimated the amount of torque these trucks were putting out so theyve had some problems with the torque converters. That may have been fixed though. Other than that no problems.

I have heard nothing but good news about the Duramax diesel. They pull great with plenty of power. Fuel ecomony is some where near 20 miles empty and 17 miles loaded. There have been very few service bulletins from GM. therefore the engine must be okay.

I've heard good things also. They are quieter that the others, have more towing capacity, greater stock hp & torque, get the same mpg. Some are wary of the aluminum heads, but I'm told Cummins has made one model diesel with aluminum heads for >20 years. If my Dodge tranny fails one more time---, a shoppin I will go.

Which tranny failed on your Dodge truck?? I had the manual 5speed OD go out on my 350 1ton. Very expensive tranny. Lucky I had the extended warranty, but it still cost me plenty. All I did was downshift to 3rd, and no 3rd gear...

Been a long time GM fan, but now I don't know..Here's my story.

In 1999 bought a 1998 Chev 1/2t 4x4 ext cab Silverado with 9999 mi on it. The first winter I had it the engine would knock cold. It would have to be 20-25 deg F for the knock. Took it to dealer and they put 40W oil in it and left it to cold soak over night. They heard it the next day. They say it is normal for 350 engines to "piston slap" when cold and it is not bad enough to fix. It had 16,700 mi on it. It is now out of warranty with 35,xxx mi and it now knocks at 45-50 deg F.

It now seems the 2002 trucks are being designed with tighter clearances for longer engine life. See the truck brochures for yourself.

I make it a point to tell one person a day how chevy stands behind their iron.

That's all BS. Go to the Chevy-diesel web page
you can talk to owners, not jelious ford or dodge
owners.Aluminum heads have been around for over
70 years.

You can read all that news group stuff on google. Use the following link for google newsgroups:

You can type "in alt.autos.4x4.chevy-trucks" OR "alt.trucks.chevy" in the group field under advanced search. You'll probably be reading forever.

They are newsgroups. Depending on your browser, you can type news:alt.autos.4x4.chevy-trucks in your location bar or enter alt.autos.4x4.chevy-trucks into your newsgroup reader which is part of your email client (subscribe function). Not all ISPs support newsgroups; if in doubt ask them.
