I need some help solving a problem with my 8n. About an hour after starting it up, it will slowly grind to a stop. It's not overheated and it won't restart. After about an hours rest it will start right back up, run for an hour then die again. Any ideas, my guess is something electrical, but I'm not having any luck so far.

Slowly *grinds* to a halt? As in the engine is seizing, stalling the tractor?

Presuming you're not actually meaning this, and instead are using the phrase lightly, N's ignition switches are well known to heat up, increasing resistance until the electricity cannot flow, killing the ignition. Easy enough to check next time the engine dies.

Don't think it's fuel related myself. When N's run out of fuel they go weak in the knees first, then they start to surge and finally die. You don't describe that symptom.

The coil, condenser and ign switch when bad can heat up and quit and when they cool down operate well again. A dirty screen in the fuel tank can give these symtoms. The gas will trickle through the rust and dirt and fill up your fuel line and then the tractor will run till it uses that gas. More sceens to clean at the fuel bowl.

i had the same problem and a old retired farm told me to check the solinoid wires for loose or dry rot. on mine the wire to the solinoid was just touching enough to get it started but after a while loosen up a shut down.

RAB gave some good tips. A quick way to try to narrow it down would be to check for spark at the plugs. Disconnect a plug wire and put a paper clip or nail or something in the wire and holp it close to the block. Crank the engine over and check for good spark. This is easy to do and will help get you in the right direction.

I was watching a western movie one time and I heard somebody say "The only good 8N is a dead 8N".

Or, if not the coil, maybe the fuel tank is causing a vacuum lock. Check the breather hole. Is the run time variable and depends on how much air space in the tank? Try draining the carb when it stops, to see if fuel is flowing at a fast enough rate as there may be a partial blockage at the tank outlet.
Maybe the condenser is ageing, it may be breaking down when hot (but will usually burn the points), but worth checking if spark is blue (good) or yellow (trouble).

You need a new coil.
