My farmall m has been sitting up for two month after having the starter rebuilt. When I try to start it the engine turns fast but fails to start. I also see smoke coming from the starter, and the wire from the ignition to the starter smokes. I replaced the wire and checked to see if the carburetor is getting gas, but still no luck. My mechanical abilities are not the greatest, but I love my M. Is there anyone who can give me advice on what else I can do to get it running. Any help would be deeply appreciated.

JT, email me and I'll walk you through it, or maybe we can use the land line.

Do you have gas in the tank, the fuel shutoff on, gas running out of the carburator when you take the plug out of the bottom or open drain valve. If no spark have you checked the points for corrosion and maybe changed the condenser. That is if you are getting power to the coil from the ignition switch, the wire that doesn't go to the dirstributor. If you have fuel, spark, (a good one blue, that will jump a quarter inch or so), then it should run. To check spark pull a plug wire and put something metal in the boot on the end of the wire. Now hold it with a rag and don't touch the tractor, next hold the metal about 1/8 to 1/4" away from a good solid ground ( a bolt head or frame rail) and with a glove on or hit the starter and watch for the spark. Maybe all these precautions are not necessary, but I don't like getting bit. When checking for gas at the carburator drain let a cup or two of gas run out to check for flow and to drain any water in the carb out. Also check the fuel filter for water. If an engine is going to start it will usually do so in way less than 30 seconds, maybe 5, 10 at the most. Tractor engines usually start fast if they are going to. How did it start before?

GAs over flow problem, think i'm missing part to float. is their something that goes up or on to the thing where gas comes out of and between when the float is al the way up. Or is the copper float just suppost to go up flush and stop the gas??

Have you checked if you are getting any spark at the spark plugs? How long are you cranking the starter, you may be cranking it too long and heating it up.

Hey Bob No I haven't checked the spark plugs, but am going to do so thanks to your input. I am only turning the engine for about 30 seconds then stop when it doesn't crank. Then I see smoke coming from the starter casing. I immediately disconnected the negative wire on the battery.

A compression guage could tell you a lot. I'm sure you could borrow one from a friend to make sure you have decent compression. Once in a while you will run across an engine that has set up that just will not start with out a new set of plugs. I (actually my dad) have an allis G that had 1 year old plugs in it and after the winter it wouldn't hit a lick. We stuck a couple used plugs in and it started hitting but just would not run until 4 new ones were installed. I just rebuilt a 53 Jubilee that was blowing oil really bad. It started just fine until i rebuilt it and the plugs refused to fire under increased compression. Hope this helps.

30 seconds is a long time for a starter to be running, way too long.
