I read somewhere on the 'net that someone had tryed to scam one of these scammers, and had been threatened with a visit by some unsavory characters (HIT MEN). That is probably another internet legend, but why take the chance? These people are willing to try to scam people out of thousands of dollars, and may have friends or connections in this country. Why fool with them? Delete the email from them without another thought, or report it to the FBI, or whatever, but why taunt them?

Email the guy and tell him to call you to discuss it in person. Give him the FBI phone number instead of yours. Gaurantee you'll never hear from him again!!!

I have seen this scam but I am going to let them run their course and see what happens. I replied to one inquiry about a small dozer I am selling . I have an account I keep just for things like Ebay and this, it has had $2.50 in it for a year now. I plan to deposit the cashiers check ,if it ever comes. And withdraw it immediatly. The most it can cost me is the $9.00 bad check fee and my original $2.50. If it cashes and I have to foreward the remainder of the money,I'll get a money order and send. If it ever happens,I'll post what comes of it right here in this discussion.
Feel free to email me with any thoughts on this.
Later,Chris

Don't do it, Chris. Big legitimate banks like you are using WILL get their money back-or really screw up Your credit, or worse.

You got the right idea. Its smart to just let him keep on trying people for money that way he catches himself in his own trape. In your email did the guy even say how he was gonning to get the dozer overseas?
Thanks

I haven't read all the responses to your e-mail, but I feel it's urgent to warn every one about this scam. Yes it is a scam. These cashier checks are counterfeit. This was reported some time back in the newspaper here in Minnesota. Similar situation where someone overseas offered to send a cashiers check for more than the amount required for the item. In this case I believe it was for an auto or truck, doesn't matter. These people were skeptical, but their bank deposited their check. These folks in turn sent on the remainder and then the bad news came. Yes, the bank demanded to be made whole again. Beware. The old adage applies, if it's seems to good to be true... Dan

I have had many emails just like this. It started after I began selling tractors and parts on EBAY. I get an email saying they are a dealer or have a buddy that is a dealer in another country and they want to purchase whatever it is. The catch is that their check will not be any good and they hope that people will be able to cash it and get the money and send their portion of it to them. That leaves the person on this end holding the bag. It IS a scam, bigtime. Just like the ones that say they are from whatever country in Africa or wherever and they have money that they need to transfer to a US account, They ask for your account number and if they get it, your account will be cleaned out.
Just be carefull .

I got an email sort of like this the other day, and I'm not even trying to sell anything. Said something about me being able to make x ammount of money by transferring x ammount of money to somebody else or something of that nature. I just deleted it. I think it's either one of two things, maybe a little of both. Someone is probably just trying to get peoples information in order to access their accounts, or for identity theft. My second guess is, if they are truly going to do the funds transfers, they are probably trying to use honest, unsuspecting country folks like us to launder their dirty money from some illegal enterprise. Either way, it's a dirty scam. Just my thoughts, Kevin

I would be willing to bet the amount of that check that it is a scam. You could turn him in but most of the time they are using fake info on their email account but can be tracked using the ip address on the email but if they are really off-shore, holding them accountable could be difficult. Turn them in if you want, it just may not do any good. Best defense is to make all aware that the scammers are out there.

Don't know much about these scams other than what I have read here. But the one sure way to protect yourself from scams from over seas is to deal in CASH ONLY. That way you don't have to be a middle man or use a money wire to a Western Union or something. If you use the Western Union don't accept any more money than you want for the truck.

If you do these things than I can't see how you can be scammed.
