I finished rebuilding the engine on my Massey Harris 555. Timing, valves and points all set ok. Positive ground system with two 6v batteries in series making 12v right? I was cranking to start, engine cranking slow, so I jumped from other vehicle. After two tries to crank heard a pop and now only the solenoid will click. Engine will turn over by hand. What did I do and how do I check starting system? How do I tow to crank, when I pulled it, the rear wheels locked in all gears. What am I doing wrong?

Starter gear is jambed on ring gear. Put tractor in a forward gear and rock it backwards. Better yet unbolt the starter and reinstall.

I feel the same as Tom The bendix on the starter has locked to the ring gear.try rocking the tractor ahead and back to loosen it or un bolt the starter and try again. if it does it again the bendix is wore and needs to be replaced.hope this helps.jim

The higher the gear you use to pull start it, the easier it turns over. Were you trying to pull it in one of the lower gears?

Just personal preference here but I never, ever jump start a positive ground system or a series connection system. I always pull the batteries, put them on a charger and get them good and hot. While they are off, clean all connections. Replace and make sure they are snug and tight.

As far as pull starting, I usually pull in next to highest gear, on soil or gravelso the tractor gets more traction.

No reason you can't jump a positive ground system, so long as the vehicles are physically separated, and there's no chance of metal to metal contact. Just hook the cables up properly to match each system, and connect to terminals AWAY FROM THE BATTERIES. Also can't see a reason why not to jump start a series connected system, as long as the system voltages match.

Taking the batteries out, and charging them 'till they're "HOT", as you say, is not without risk of a battery explosion when you're handling them, or reconnecting them.

It would be a lot safer to clean the battery posts, or even remove the batteries for a washdown of the batteries and battery box, then put them back in place, and charge them, making your connection at the starter switch or solenoid, to prevent a spark near the battery.

I've witnessed 2 battery explosions, and I'm glad they were in their battery boxes, and I wasn't fiddling with the terminals on them when they blew!

Mainly it is personal bias. I've only blown up 2 batteries, both were straight 12v to 12v and were in the tractor (jump starting).

Main reasons I like to pull the batteries to charge (I only pull 6v orseries connections): Jump starting puts a lot of strain on the alternator of the jumping vehicle and always a risk of some stray voltage feeding back into some very expensive computer and charging system components. Dealer used that as an excuse back in 90 not to honor about $5K worth of warranty work on a Ford truck I had with a fried computer. Wasn't what happened, they since recalled those computers, but it was enough to void my warranty.

Clean up all your electrical connections between the batteries and the starter, as well as the jumper between the batteries. Take them apart and clean them up with emery cloth or a wire brush.

When you try to start, if it still cranks slow, check to see if any of the connections are hot after you crank. If there's a hot connection, then that's the one causing the problem. Otherwise, you probably have a bad starter or solenoid.

As far as pull starting goes, it doesn't mean anything's wrong if it won't turn over in high gear. You just don't have enough traction on whatever surface you're on.

If the solenoid pulls in and the starter does'nt turn , it sounds as if something from the sol. to the starter has let go. The POP may have been a wire burning in two. Good Luck. Mguy.

Tried to crank this morning after 12 hrs of charging batteries and heard some slight noise out of starter. I think I have starter problem! Thanks everyone for the help.
