I have a JD 5400 - 60 hp tractor now. I am looking for something around 75 hp for a second tractor - that would not be required for everyday use, but will be plowing, disking, working. I believe that I want to be in the 60's or 70's for the sake of parts availability, etc. Value is, (obviously), a concern. Do I want an Oliver 1800?, IH?, Case?, Ford?, etc. Most brands are represented by dealers here. I need three point, rear PTO, remotes, and only want diesel. I understand that everyone has their favorites, and I am looking to reduce the risk of having major problems like broken cranks, etc. Thank you in advance.

Bill, You stated that you wanted 70+ horses! OK heres my $.02. 1st More hp is better than less. It can be bought with less dollars than the smaller tractors, Also keeps you out of the weekend/hobby/suburban/would be farmer market class of tractors! With that said here goes
JD 4010,4000,4020,4320,,4030,4230 will work nicely
IH 706,806,756,856,766,(966 ..My baby) all will fill your bill nicely.
Others, there are Fords,MMs Masseys that will fill your bill. Finding one that hasn't been ABUSED, Road hard and put up wet will be the trick!! You said all the major flavors of tractors had dealerships close by. Talk to the shop manager see whoes tractors to stay away from and whoes tractors when traded in are ready to go back to the field. Do your home work! Its just like buying a used pickup. If it looks ok drives ok, then maybe so. If it looks like it has been abused, and you get a knot in your stomach ,better just walk..No run away fast!
Hope this helps.
Good Luck,
John A.

I'd get a 7610 or 7710 Ford. Great parts availability at a resonable cost. Lots of aftermarket parts. Can get them for under 9000 w/o cab in good shape with under 4000 hours.

Bill, Deere is ok at best. Their "old quality" is no longer there! Parts are easily acquired because they are a necessity.

830-930 Case is about the most HP per $ . I had a 1030 and wish I never got rid of it . The 06 IH series are getting to be a good price . I have a 706 with a 310 D , very good tractor .

How does a 930 compare to a 970 in power and age? My brother in law has a pair old 970s he's been running for almost 20 years with minimal problems. They may not have been worked real hard, but he's part time farming almost 500 acres of row crop with them.

Both tractors run in the mid 80`s on HP . The 30 series was in the 60`s and the 70 series in the 70`s . Case is a fine tractor , had a dealer in the area and he still caters to case but like I said before they are the cheap HP around here .

Around here you can pick up larger Massey Fergusons cheaper than anything else (worth mentioning anyway). A MF 285 is a great tractor it has about 80 Hp and is very verisle and not too physically large. Don't really know the price range but likely around $10,000 would get you a good one with a factory cab. We had a 285 and it was an excellent tractor had good power and very dependable and it was very hard to get it stuck (don't ask me why).

There are other MFs of that size range but I really don't like the 10XX series, some are good some are bad. The 2XX series was a great workhorse.

Second choice would be a JD 3130. Quite a good tractor but I like the Massey better.

If a cab isn't required I know that IH 856s can be had for 4 to 6 thousand. They use basicly the same engines as the 1256-1456 but no turbo. They run about 80 to 90 hp but too much power is better then not enough. As for resale, the market it well established for them, I don't see anything knocking their price down.

well you can pick up a ford 8000 for a pretty decent price, usualy from about $4000 to $6000 bucks, its a bit bigger than ya stated, its around 105hp, but if its not your main tractor then thats not a huge concern. i was looking for about a 75 hp tractor too, but i came across my ford 8000 for a decent price so i bought it, we have a few 30-40 hp tractors for smaller jobs so going too big on the tractor wasnt a problem. the ford 8000s used the 401 cubic inch 6 cyl diesel, the same engine used up until the late 80s or early 90s so its a time tested design that has held up very well. i havent had any problems getting any parts for my tractor so far, all i have had to do to it was brakes which it needed when i bought it, they are wet brakes tho so it was expensive but the brakes should last for 5 or 6 thousand hours under most conditons. i paid $4000 for my ford 8000 with a cab and almost new rear tires on it. i couldnt find anything near that price in the 75 hp range, and it sure is nice to have a tractor that can pull a baler and full wagon on any hill, and believe me some of the fields i do have some serious hills. also its nice on the road to have the power and weight to tow 2 or 3 loaded wagons and most of all to be able to stop those wagons also

2840/2940 Deere, OR find a nice 4020. That would be a bit bigger than you wanted, but it's a great tractor, and they hold their re-sale value better than anything ever. The down side is you'll have to pay more for them than others. Parts are easy to get, and are no more expensive than other brands. Sinse you already have the 5400, you can get all your parts at one spot. The 2640/2840/2940's go for around $10,000 to $12,000 in good shape. (Around my area anyway) You can find good 4020's for less than that. You'll have about 20 hp more than you say that you need, but too big is better than too small.

i would recommend the IH 856 they are a great tractor and have never had any trouble finding parts i personally won't buy a JD because our local dealers are starting to lean towards the lawn and garden and don't carry alot of bigger stuff including parts

Are the 2840 / 2940 the type of John Deeres that Deere has built it's reputation with? The 5400 that I have has had several problems that are minor, but all due to poor quality. When I looked at the internal components from another 5400, I noticed that lack of heavy duty parts (stamped instead of cast, etc.)

No, I would say the 4010, 4020, 4230, 3010, 3020, 4240 and JD tractors of that vintage.

JD made built it's reputation on the tractors it build right after the popin jonny's.

I've heard that some of the newer stuff isn't like the 5400 isn't as good as the old stuff although the little compacts (Yanmar) a have a good rap.

The 2840/2940 series is as good of a tractor as John Deere ever made. They are strong and reliable. They were still built when the "electronic" tractors of today were still a pipe dream. They are much sought after by all the farmers in my area. I have a 2440. It is a very well built machine. My brother-in-law has a 2840. He is notorious for not taking care of his equipment. The 2840 is 23 years old, and still plugging away. The best part is, you get a good sound tractor, that you can use for several years, then sell it for more than you payed. NO TRACTORS WILL EVER MATCH JOHN DEERE'S RESALE VALUE. There is a good reason why they are the only tractor maker that hasn't had to sell out. Strong tractor, strong company, great parts network. Go with GREEN!
