I use a 4' on my 8N. I'm confident that I could easily use a 5' in most stuff and even a 6' in light stuff... The 4' is easier to get into tight spots (between trees, etc... and I've got plenty of those), but the 5' will "cover your tracks" (standard 'N' width is ~5').

The horsepower differences between an 8N and a 9N are negligible...

DEFINETLY get the ORC... and limiter chains (or a 'Zane Thang') would be recommended, as the 9N does not have position control.

Assuming this tractor will be used mostly with the bushhog then consider another tractor but if you insist on the 9n then 5 ft. should be ok if the tractor is up to par on power.

As has been suggested here in the past, If you brush hog with a N series tractor, get an over running clutch (ORC). The N series does not have live PTO and the momentum of the mower will propel the tractor forward when you try to stop.

I have a Fergie TO-20 and opted for a 4 foot Bush Hog - Squealer Model. Well satisfied with it and still don't always make a full width cut if heavy going. Running over large clumps of Alder Brush, some up to 2" diam and Bush Hog chewed it up, but must have damaged my oil drain plug and/or seal - have a small repair to make. With the low HP tractors, I thought it would be better to go with a smaller width mower to insure adequate power. Have fun, but the overriding clutch is a must-have.

I also use a 4' cutter, a Woods M-4 to be specific. My T030 is occasionally taxed to its limits in hood high heavy grass and briars, forcing a downshift to 1st gear to keep from abusing it.If you only plan to mow pastures and easy stuff a 5' mower may be used. All farm impliments are HP rated to assist the customer choose the correct size for his tractor.
