In your opinion (and try to be impartial - ha!).

What is the best tractor that was ever made in the U.S. of A.

After I read all of the posts I'll tell you what I think is the best.

I agree with Indy for each catagory. I also like the Fordsons (majors, super majors, and dextras)

My favorite and my vote for the best tractor in the USA, the Ford 8000 tough tractor all over. The 401's are great motors, the dual power tranny are tough to break and they have planetary rearends. My vote for best tractor in the world goes to the Ford 7710 stage II

MF135. Works all day, great size, enough hp and options to do what needs to be done. Beautiful styling.

I think it's a toss up between the Farmall Super MTA and the John Deere 4020D in their respective eras. The Fords and Fergies were admirable but you could never pay for a farm with one.

Pound for pound the best tractor I ever used-and I mean used - was the IH B414 gas. Plowed with 3 16 inch bottoms on a Ford 101 plow, chopped corn with an IH 350 and wagon through 6 inches of November snow - could feel the power transfer right under you to the pto. Only about 35 hp with no styling what-soever. If I didn't have to go elsewhere to work for 11 years and not want to let it sit I'd still be using it.

There have been a lot of excellent tractors made in the USA, but if I had to pick one it would be the John Deere 4320. I sure like mine.

Anyone that knows me, knows my answer to that question. Even though its a gas hog, I'll go with the John Deere G every time. Built as a 38 HP tractor, with drivetrain to match that of the 125 HP tractors of the 60's. Hoss High, and Bull Strong, is the saying that comes to mind!

i don't think they ever made one that good, but if you put a dt 436 ih engine in a 4440 deere chassis and put the door on the side of the cab instead of the corner.you would have a great tractor.

I think the JD 720 diesel with a V4 pony is awesome. I love to hear those 2 cyl. convert such small amouts of fuel into such an amazing amount of horsepower for a 2 cyl. I think the JD 4020 is second best.Just my opinion!

I think the best tractor ever built was the Massey-Harris 44 pedal tractor my grandpa the M-H dealer gave me for christmas a long, long time ago. Wish I still had it. I think the 4020 Deere was pretty fair, too.

This pains me to no end to say because I am a Ford man, but all my favorite Fords are made in England. Of the US I'd have to say 4020 JD. Think I may have to go gouge my eyes out now :-).

Opinions, opinions, opinions. What would you consider best? best to work on, best to operate,
best for resale value? Best for horsepower and maneuverability? It all boils down to what you enjoy the most. For me I enjoy a 4020 J.D. Now ask an IH fan and he'll tell you different.

Each era had it's own best tractor. The 9N Ford freed the farmer and the mules. The letterd JD's were great but he 70 Diesel was ahead of it's time. IH caught up with the Super MTA diesel. AC's D17 was a great machine. I guess my all time favorite though is the 4020 power shift.

My grandfather bought a John Deere G in new 1939. A few Fordsons were in the area. No match for the G. The G was the first engine driven vehicle I ever drove. After WWII, my parents tenant farmed on the place and used the G. As we were ending our tenant farmer days, we cut logs, skidded them with horses and hauled them 7 miles to a steam powered sawmill with the G and a big trailer to build our house. So if I limit my opinion to that time period, the G is the tractor.

I vote for the Farmall M but I bet in another 20 years there will be some john deere 3020 and 4020 still working too. By that time they will be the age the newer Ms are now. Oh, and I almost forgot; those little Ford-Fergusons will live forever.
