My father-in-law was recently placed in a nursing home. He has an old IH McCormick Farmall tractor that has been sitting out for some time. From photos on the internet, it would appear to be a model H or M. Is there a way to distinguish between these two models if the lettering on the tractor is unreadable? The tires are in a "tricycle" configuration with the front tires being side by side, not "spread". There is a box on the right side that says "Farmall Lift All". It has a 4 cylinder gas motor. It has a rear PTO shaft and a side belt drum. It is a drawbar tractor. The steering shaft enters the top of the front cowling at a shallow angle about 1/3 of the way from the rear to the front. Cast into the engine/transmission casing is "359504-R1" and 4 9 Z. All I can read on the aluminum serial plate is "25795 M" and I can't tell is that is a complete number. The wheels are 38". Thanks for any help that can be provided. Joe Mallone

The Casting Code - "4 9 Z" would mean April 9,1954 doesn't it?
And the Box on the right side that says "lift-all",could that be the reservoir for the live hydraulics on a later "53?
My Thought is that it's a 1953 stage 2 Super M.Anyone else on this??

It has to be a Super M. If ser.# is correct, it's a 1954, casting date code says 1954, if it was a Super H, the ser. # would be for 1953, but since the casting code says 1954, I'd stick with the Super M.

Quick & dirty way to tell the difference from a distance. Gas tank-hood line on an H should be almost level with top of rear tires. On an M, with a stronger, taller engine, the hood & tank would be approx 6 inches higher. Hope this helps a little

Sounds like you've got a 1941 M. Just going by the "25795 M" - 1941 models started with ser. #25371 according to the serial number link to the left of the page.
