When I adjust the clutch on a tractor do I lengthen or shorten the rod? And how much should one turn (# threads) initially?

Different tractors, different designs. Some shorten, some lengthen.

If you're adjusting the clutch pedal, you want to turn the rod to remove the free play (or excess travel) in the pedal. For most tractors, about 1" of free pedal travel is normal.

if you drive it very far out of adjustment the heat will ruin it had a friend in fort smith that waited two weeks after he got his adjustment out of whack too try and fix it clutch was no longer worth saving make sure you get it right and not engaged
