Around here they use alot of "pink lady" stone for driveways. I am not too excited about it especially since I lost count of how many tires I have repaired pulling them out of flats at work. What do you use for your driveway and how does it pack down and hold up?

Farmer, Regular ol Texas "calachie" I dig it out of my pit. Haul it myself, spread with a 966 and a 3pt blade. Them rolled smooth with a 2Ton, 4ft wide steel roller. It's an old Tx-DOT road roller from the 50's. Then re-roll after each rain.

I did it right. Had an excavator pull out the top 6 inches of dirt, then laid in 3-5 inches of sand then 4 inches of 1X3 limestone, then capped it with 21AA. holds up very well to dumptrucks, the UPS driver and my wife.

Very coarse gravel right out of a gravel bar in the brook when the water was low. It doesn't budge.
(Don't tell those wacko environmentalists!)

Dust when it's dry and mud when it rains. God bless.

for a few years I would get a tri axle load or two of number 4s the size of my fist spread out each year from the local quarry but only in the spring during mud season, then I would pack it into the mud by running my mack over it like a roller. After I got a good base I put modified on top of the no 4s. Modified is no 2s the size of your thumb with smaller stone and screenings mixed in to pack well. Then I got free screenings from around a crusher with some junk mixed in with in, some scrap metal and a ocassinal pumpkin sized rock ect. After spreading that with the 8-n I bought no 1s the size of a pea and spread it out and rolled it in to the screenings. It is real nice but if the ground does not freeze up real hard brfore the snow a snow plow will act like a bulldozer and throw all the fine stuff off to the side.

Had a neighbor once who threw his beer cans into the driveway, supposedly to flatten them for recycling. Trouble was, he never bothered to pick them up. You can bet no salesmen ever stopped there- I thing he even had the Watchtower folks buffaloed!

Is that what it takes to keep those JWs away? No amount of telling them not to ever come back here has been successful to this point :(

Just because I use my initials (JW) here and at work gives you no right to be insulting. In the words of a co-worker, "How Rude".

Gravel, shale, clinkers from the old stoker, several mud puddles that appear in the same spot no mater how many times we grade them over, 2 bicycles that would get runover if I didnt get off the tractor and move them, oil spots, a few flat Prince Albert tobacco cans left over from when Grandpa used to grace the grounds, 3 ducks drinking out of the water puddles, another cat I havent seen before, the neighbors dog trying to visit our dog, a fuel truck (I wonder how much its going to cost me this time), 2 combines supposedly field ready waiting for the soy beans to get dry enough to cut. 1 semi grain truck waiting for the inspector to certify it road worthy, 1 tractor and grain cart, and my wife standing with her hands on her hips wondering why its taking so long making it in the house for supper.

White clay with concrete gravel mashed down into it over the years. After years of packing it is like a brick. Don't think a small dozer could dig it up!!

Mud, some crushed limestone, a little "creek rock", and a whole bunch of oil spots. If I make the driveway too nice, then the salesmen won't pass on by! ( My apologies if you're a salesman)

maybe I should leave it alone. I too would be covering up the oil spots and come to think of it, there has not been any salesman in my driveway for quite awhile. I would finish painting the garage but I don't want my taxes going up either. My work is done here. Thanks!
