I put Rotella 15W-40 in my Farmall H, thinking that if it is a good oil for my backhoe and bulldozer it was good for the tractor. A friend of mind said that he was told you should not use Rotella in a gasoline engine. Anyone have any thoughts on this subject?

I don't know if any of you heard this one: a few years ago either rotella or delo was run in a fleet of similar trucks, one half had oil and filter changed at 25,000 mile intervals and the other half got a filter change and topped off at 5,000 miles. All engines made it to 1,000,000 miles and when tore down, they found less than .001 inch wear on the bearings and .0015 inch wear on the sleeves and pistons between the full service and the filter change and top off. Amazing huh? They were 444E Cummins.

1. Diesel oil in gas engines is A-OK, as long as the required specs (SA, SF, SJ, whatever) are met.
2. Oldtimers weren't fond of multi-viscosity oils, but time has proven that they're safe in ALL engines (in the proper viscosity range).
3. As long as you change regularly--and frequently--hi-detergent oils (Such as Rotella) are probably better for your engine anyway.
4. Main thing is to use a GOOD oil--any major brand, they're all the same with the exception of one or another additive--and not just whatever the supermarket has on sale, AND to keep it changed regularly.

Years back, my dad had a '62 International Travelall wagon with a 304 V8 that he ran nothing but Havoline hi-detergent oil in (SAE 30 in summer, SAE 20 in the winter). He changed oil EVERY 2,000 miles...and, 240,000 miles later, that ol' Binder was STILL running strong...and never had the pan or a head off it! Seeing is believing, and I was convinced!

Oh, yeah...in case I didn't make my case well enough...remember to keep the oil changed regularly and frequently!

Bill we are running Chevron 15-40 exclusivley in our state of Arizona fleet vehicles from 2003 sedans, light trucks, heavy haulers, AG type tractors and construction equipment. Dello and Rotella are merely brand name monikers for a diesel formulated motor oil. We rarely have an oil related problem and everythinrun up to and over 200k mildes.

Shell puts out a small book on there oils..... I have one ....They say the oil is made to meet diesel engine needs.....but they recommend it for gas engines also.....Rotella T engine oit is a fleet oil, for use in both engines.....I have used it in my gas engines for nearly 30 years.....after a tead down, the engines are as clean as new.....suprised me too..... go for it ,you cant use a better oil....

like others have said, rotella has better aditives than required by gasoline engines. i just purchase one type of oil for every thing on the farm (except 2 cyc mix oil). at one time i used "a" for this "b" for that "c" for the otherthing, for the past 15 years, its been rotella for everything.

Hi Bill,

I think that your friend, although he means well and is trying to be helpful, has his wires crossed.

You shouldn't run oil, which has been formulated only for gasoline engines, in a diesel. The other way around is perfectly acceptable & okay.

If fact, your thinking is right on target because you are actually using better oil in the H than it really needs.

As far as what brand name to use; Rotella, Texaco, Co-Op, Penns or whatever, it really doesn't matter. It doesn't make 6 eggs worth of difference one way or the other.

Contary to what some will say, I contend that this "brand thing" is pure hogwash. Engines are iron and have no preferences; the choice of what brand to use is purely a human emotional 'favorite'. :>)

Bingo. Allan is 100% correct. While I'm not a Rotella fan, it does carry the latest gasoline specs (API SL & SJ). API specs are backwards compatible, meaning that if your engine calls for an SC (1967 and older spec) for example, an oil meeting the SJ rating (2001 and older) will cover it.

This is NOT always true for diesel engines and specs. And oils made for use in cars (ie Mobil DCO or Chevron Supreme) should NEVER be used in diesels, EVEN if the weight is correct.

The only thing going against you is the 15W40 rating, where your tractor calls for #30. However, frequency of oil changes is HUGELY more important than viscosity. If you have the 15W40 on hand, and will change more often because you do, then use it. If you have to run out and buy a case of #30 every time you change oil, you will likely put it off.

Anyways, that's my 2 bits.

Allan, I agree with you. As long as the the oil meets the engine manufacturers spec and API use classication, the brand label is unimportant. The engine manufacturers will tell you this also.

I run rotella in all of my antique tractors and have never had problem. I have even run in a mildly built 350 chevy and it was the only oil that didn't burn or get really dirty.

Bill, Though I am not a Fan of Rotella, this is on the same subject. I run Chevron Dello 15x40 in my 966,M,cub cadet,.....Also a 86 chevy Suburban-350 EFI (started dello @ 87K...now has 235K),A 97 Ford F-150 4.6 V-8, (started Dello @13K now has 210K). I would think you should get simular results from Rotella.
Good Luck,
John A.
