Tow truck: IH Diesel pump loses prime.

The tow truck I use for hauling my tractors and racecar is an International with a Series 60 Detroit. I am very pleased with the performance and economy of this motor. However when the truck sits for more than about 30 days, the fuel system loses its prime. It will start instantly, idle rough for about 5 seconds, and then die. At this time the fuel filter is drained empty. If I fill the filter reservoir from a can it will start right up again and run fine until it sits again.

Any suggestions?

TIA

You have a air leak. Does the filter base have a primer valve like a tire valve stem? Put a cap on it or plug it or it will siphon air back in causing that. We were experiencing same thing you are with a Cummins and that is what it was. You could also have a cracked fitting or line someplace.

Thanks for the comments guys. My filter base has a ball valve. What is strange is the filter will have fuel in it just before starting, (after an extended time sitting) but will empty quickly after starting the engine. So the leak must be prior to the filter? I have not traced the feeder line to the filter. I will do that this weekend and check the fittings there. Hmmm, I wonder if the vent lines on my tanks might have gotten plugged. Maybe an insect packed them full of mud. Another thing to check!

Sounds like you have a small leak at the filter area, or in the filter base, and it is letting it siphon back to the tank.
