I am fed up with vandals messing with my ranch gate and trying to steal my electric gate opener etc. The problem is that it is about 1 mile from my house to the road and I have no way to install an electric security light as I have no 110v power nearby. I do have a nice 12v system that is solar trickle charged that powers my gate opener. I have a plywood battery box with two 6 volt golf cart batteries that gives me mucho reserve power. I was thinking of pole mounting an overhead security light that consists of a 12v headlamp and then hooking that up to a motion sensor and the light would stay on for say 5 minutes each detection. I have plenty of battery power for it all but I am stumped on the motion detector. I bought one for a 110v light in my stupidness, but I now realize that it does not work on 12v dc. Any suggestions on what to do about all this. I would appreciate any experiences and ideas concerning gate openers and lights and security. Thanks in advance for any help!!

Well I for one if I was to mess with your gate would like to have a light to see by , ,,, JMHO, but I think a silent Alarm located at your house and barn would be much more practical ... Would not take much you could even use a set of them fm transcervers with alarm to talk mode , rig it to signal if the gate/ equipment is messed with and it can be carried with you so as long as you at within range it will alert you ... Bill g. As for power supply you already have it , just hook up to the 12v supply , (you may have to drop the voltage down to run the TR...

Northern Equipment (used to be Northern Hydraulics), makes the whole setup...battery, solar charger, motion detector & light fixture...already assembled. I think it sells for less than $100.

Is it possible to just weld the opener to the gate,
or if it is all wood, use welded metal bars as bolts ? Slow them down enough and they will go somewhere else.

I can not weld the opener to the gate or post due to the way that it operates. Besides I have to be able to remove it if it malfunctions as that is the only way to manually open the gate. I'll check into the links posted so far. Thanks a lot for the ideas folks!

My dad and his Winchester Model 97 pump shot gun earned him the reputation, not to be messing around on our farm! We had very few problems....but when we did and bad words was the responce....no less than 3 loads of bird shot. right on em.....

There are motion detectors available that operate in the 5- 12 volt DC range. They are used to trip security system alarm panels. You might need a small relay to operate the light when tripped by the motion detector. This relay would probably have to have a time delay "pulse extender" built in, as generally these security products only generate a quick single pulse when tripped, and when this occurs, the relay for the 12 Volt light needs to latch "on" for the length of time you want the light to remain on.

Using this method eliminates the need for an invertor.

Check out the link below to view some available low-voltage security equipment. I don't think they sell to private individuals, only businesses, but if you find a product you could use, a local security businees could probably get it for you, from this or another source. A local security specialist could advise you how to interface a low-voltage passive infrared detector with your 12 Volt floodlight.

You may also want to consider a motion activated game camera if you can mount it out of reach of anyone without a ladder. They work pretty well for us deer hunters.

I don't know if this will work with the motion detector circuit, but 12 volt light bulbs are available from Napa for use in 12 volt drop lights, same shape and thread as their 120v counterpart. Maybe you will luck out and just have to change the bulbs.

Bud;

Try Backwoods Solar Electric, c;ick on link below, in lower right hand of window it brings up you will see "motion detectors". Clic on that, it will take you to a good high quality 12vdc motion detector. If you were to scrooll down from there you will find a motion detection light with a small solar panel, for not much more $$$, I used one up at the cabin for 10-15 years, can't remember when I put it in. Bought a spare at that time for when the first one died, haven't used the spare yet. I may replace the battery some time soon.

I did not buy mine from this outfit, but I did pay more. Can't remember where I bought mine, it would have beeen a chain or Mom & POP hardware store. HTH

Saw an installation recently you are looking for. It was a 12V motion detector light/battery assembly that had a built-in solar battery charger. To keep out of the reach of vandals, the whole thing was mounted up on a pole. The only problem is that I have no idea who the manufacturer was.

Use a power inverter. Converts DC to AC power for running small AC powered things. Find out the wattage of your light and get an inverter with at least the same output as you need and I bet it will work. Most tool stores have these for 30 - 40 dollars...

the problem with power inverters is they use elctricity all the time most use about 1 amp with no load. this is most likely more than the solar panel puts out, so your batteries will quickly be depleated. you need a 12 volt solution. luckily, like george said, there is a 12 volt motion sensor/light/solar panel combo. i saw it in a catalog, but i do not know what catalog it was.

John is certainly correct in saying that invertors draw amperage when there is no load.

I purchased a Vector 700/1400 surge watt unit from Tractor Supply Company. It has a no load draw of .8 amp, i.e. 8/10ths amp. The newer electronic ones have hardly any no load draw.

I think that an invertor would be ideal.

I would also suggest that you wire an auto horn into the circuit, so that it honks when the light comes on. You might not hear it, but the person standing below it doesn't know that. A horn, horn relay, and a turn signal flasher should do the trick.

Take it one step further, and during the summer time use a spray tank of permanent dye with spray nozzles aimed in several directions around the battery bank, controller, etc. Trigger it by a motion detector with a 12 volt sprayer boom solenoid in the supply hose. Perhaps you'd rather use a quick dry laquer to spray on their auto. Easy marking for the sheriff's officers to find.
